This is not a good looking team :(
It’s still early, but yes not a great start. Not too concerned however. High Point started hot and NU started cold it happens. Just hope we pull away going into the 2nd half.

Good lord… getting out rebound and shooting only 27% against High Point.

High Point had to back off a bit with the fouls, but there is no way we’ll get those calls in b1g play.

but they just don’t look ready to face the competition. Maybe the second half they’ll show up.

So a one point lead at halftime turns into a 35 point blowout by the end of the game. I didn't watch it, but I'll take it.

Great win. Tough team so far. The Ryans didn’t miss a shot. (Young was a monster today.) Nance looking confident. Some good team defense. Simmons is gonna be veryyyy good in a year or two and should get some minutes this year in big games. (Smart, smooth, athletic player.) Berry will be good this year. Hoping hero-ball Audige doesn’t mess up the mojo when he comes back.

Collins provides an update on Barnhizer, he was out with the flu, wasn't present to try and prevent spreading it to rest of the team.

First half like Merrimack

Second half like Chicago State

Rebounding is gonna be a problem.

Nance was glorious. Second game in a row being decisive and confident.

Was worried about how things went in the first half, but so much to be pleased about in the second half:

Nance's confidence and aggressiveness.
Buie playing under control and getting his teammates involved.
Young's great post play.
Greer's poise and clutch senior leadership.
Simmons' potential and hustle - loved seeing him scrambled to get that loose ball on the floor.
Williams' ferociousness on that dunk!

The few negatives:
Getting off to a slow start in the first half - I don't think we will get away with that very often in Big Ten play.
Nicholson: looked a little lost on the defensive side. Appears tentative.
Berry - quiet night for him, but not as big a deal when so many other players had great games.
Beran - sigh...

But overall, feeling very positive about the team.

More specifically, I thought that defense was soft and not very physical in the first 8 minutes. Im concerned an average B10 team would've had them down by much more than 9.

Simmons has a very high ceiling. Kid has great hops and an amazing wingspan. He just looks different out there. I don’t think we’ve ever had a player quite like him. It’s going to be fun to watch him grow into his body and develop as a player. Very excited about his future at NU.

First half couldn't make a shot, Second half couldn't miss.

Fun watching Simmons. Kid leaps for rebounds. Got 4. Energizer bunny. Looks uncomfortable at the free throw line.

Roper had some very nice passes. loved his pass in the highlight reel where he blocks the guy from stopping an over and back then drives and dishes back to Young

Greer had a strong game. I've never seen him score like that.

We are still streaky. When we are making shots we look amazing, but when we are missing them for long stretches it's tough to watch.

High point's Wright has an amazing stroke. I think Collins said he could play anywhere.

Crazy 2d half. 61 points!!!! I was worried about our scoring ability but it is there when we play well.

Nice to see the student section full

Great hustle and moves his feet really well on D. I hold Vic Law in very high regard, and Simmons as a frosh reminds me of Law. Athletic, strong defense, works hard on the court, gets to the foul line. Law had more offense his first year than we have seen so far from CS, but it has been only 2 games.

Scored more points than any other Big Ten team last night. Currently 3rd in total points and 4th in winning margin.

Obviously a lot of caveats in there — hard to judge who has played stiffer competition yet — but from a confidence perspective it has to be nice for this team to see the shots going in.

I don’t get Beran. Maybe he lacks confidence, but seems like this should be his year to shine (he looks like a Big 10 body now), and so far he’s been marginal at best. Maybe the staff should focus on getting him going against one of these early cup cakes.

I posted this in another thread, but it’s nice to have depth. We no longer need every player to have a good night to win. If 3-4 guys aren’t producing, we can just lean on the 4-5 guys who are.

If this team can shoot decently from 3 pt land and play hard on defense I think they should at least be a middle of the conference finisher.

High Point had a couple really good players, but it seemed like the intense, physical defense the Cats played really wore them down in the second half. And Collins must have lit into the team at halftime about rebounding, because they stopped giving up second shots.

As I'm often the Debbie Downer in here, I will add this feels a lot like a thread after we thrashed Arkansas Pine Bluff and Chicago State last year.

Went to the game last night. Got there a little late, we were down 17-8 early.

My impressions...
Young looked great on both ends of the floor. 20 points in 15 minutes. Seemed quicker.
Nance looked great on both ends of the floor. 22 points and 10 rebounds in 15 minutes.
They played together a total of zero minutes.
Buie looked controlled and effective. His floater is a great weapon.
We got a lot of wide open looks for the guards.
Beran appeared unworthy of significant playing time. Collins is still telling him what to do during live play.
Elyjah Williams did not impress me like he has impressed others. I think he will probably struggle against Big Ten players. Yes, he has good size but I didn't see the quickness he will need. Of course its just one game.
Julian Roper showed skills and court awareness.
Casey Simmons is quick, can jump and clearly has skills. He will contribute but is slightly built and may get pushed around playing the "small forward" on defense.
Ty Berry didn't have a great game, but is very active on defense, has good awareness on offense, didn't have a great night shooting the ball. He is a plus on the intangibles - a disruptive defender.
Ryan Greer played well. There will be times when he and Buie can succeed as the backcourt against Big Ten competition, but I can't see him going against good point guards. He gets the ball inside effectively.
Matt Nicholson looked capable in the couple minutes he was allowed to play. Nice basket on his one touch in the post, going right thru the defender to score.

For what its worth, Eastern Illinois, our first opponent, went down to Saint Louis and got beat 50-16 in the first half, en route to an 86-44 thrashing by Saint Louis U.

High Point is much better than both of those programs
We also won 3 games to start conference play. So?

I was seriously concerned with CC’s words that “these guys know they will all play 20 minutes or so a night”. You play your best players more than 20. Unless you have all players of equal quality. Which, for as promising as our frosh are, or Williams, Greer or Beran, they’re not at the level of splitting minutes. They’re at the level or resting Nance/Buie/Young/Berry/Audige.

i hope he meant in non conference play. Because in conference that utopia of perfectly interchangeable players will come to a quick halt once we get punched, hard, in the throat.

Did he really say that?
How can he possibly think that?
He has 3 guys who should be playing as many minutes as possible. He has 4 guys who have yet to prove they can compete successfully at the Big Ten level.

I guess I'm assuming that we are trying to win. Thats a reasonable assumption, right?

There's an old adage about successful basketball teams - the players have to know their roles.
"I don't want to hurt Robbie's feelings" is not a formula for success.

Yeah thats the thing with non con you never know. However I’d rather be 2-0 with 2 blowout wins than a lot of the other big ten teams who have either lost or won close games against much inferior competition. As for CCs quote I don’t really know what to make of it tbh.

NU is winning by the margin it should. Doing this without a starter. Team looks improved in every area over last year as they should against this level of competition. No idea how this will translate as the competition improves. I have more optimism than I did before the season that this is a team that can compete night in and out.

If he did , it was to keep their hopes high.
