Garrett was going to Bama if offered?

In today's DJ, Garrett said he was flat denied by Bama but couldn't turn down LSU (he signed yesterday). Best quote - "We called Alabama and Major Applewhite said point blank that he wasn't interested and didn't think that he could play in the SEC," Collins said. "Game over." This is the first I heard about him and the Tide. Sounds like we weren't even second for his services. Oh well, we'll survive...

TUPELO - Goodbye Tupelo, hello LSU.

And goodbye to all the speculation that he'll change his mind.

That's what Tupelo High senior quarterback Chris Garrett symbolically said on Friday morning when he signed his SEC scholarship papers in front of family, coaches and faculty members. The signed documents will allow Garrett, who graduated on Thursday, to officially enroll at LSU for the spring semester and begin working out with the Tigers football team.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound quarterback committed to LSU in March and will begin classes on Jan. 12. He plans to major in general business administration.

"I've been wanting to play big-time college football since I've been in the seventh and eighth grade," said Garrett, who was dressed in a purple and gold tie his father picked out for him. "It's just a dream come true.

"I'm just going to take full advantage of it when I get there."

For Garrett, who plans on leaving for Baton Rogue at 5 a.m. on Jan. 9, LSU wasn't his original choice.

The Tupelo quarterback grew up a Mississippi State fan and originally committed to State in October of last year. But after paying LSU a visit in February, Garrett decided he couldn't pass up an opportunity to play for the defending national champions.

"Chris wanted to go ahead and commit, and get all that stuff behind him so that he could focus on the season," said Tupelo head coach Eric Collins, a lifelong LSU fan.

Ironically, neither State nor LSU were his top destination during Garrett's junior season.

"If they had offered, I was going to Alabama," Garrett said.

Before committing to MSU last fall, Garrett had gone to some of the Crimson Tide's games and realized that the Alabama coaches were not that interested in him. Garrett then moved on from there and didn't think about Alabama again.

Ironically, Alabama head coach Nick Saban, when visiting with Golden Wave receiver Chad Bumphis at the high school on Tuesday, asked Tupelo High head coach Eric Collins about Garrett's commitment to LSU.

Collins then explained to Saban how Alabama was Garrett's first choice before committing to MSU, and that Collins and Garrett had spoken with the Alabama offensive coordinator at the time to see if the Tide were interested.

'Game over' for Alabama
"We called Alabama and Major Applewhite said point blank that he wasn't interested and didn't think that he could play in the SEC," Collins said. "Game over."

Saban's response, according to Collins, was that his program now has a new offensive coordinator in Jim McElwain and "Coach McElwain loves the guy."

"I said, I will mention it to Chris, and if there's any ray of hope I will let you know, but I can tell you now that I believe that Chris is solid with LSU.'"

Realistically, Garrett likes the opportunity he will have at LSU and the direction the Tigers are headed into next season under head coach Les Miles.

"He (Miles) said there is no starting quarterback going into the spring," Garrett said. "Whoever's the best quarterback coming out of that will have the upper leg going into the fall.

"We've got a four-star receiver committed, another five-star that's a solid commitment that no one knows about, and they're in contention for the No. 1 player in the country who is a wide receiver. So, you are going to have targets to throw to if you go there."

Nice. He did pick up something from Crooms after all.

He had two SEC recievers to work with this season at Tupelo High and still played like crap against high school competition. There is no reason that team should have lost 4 games. THe best two games Tupelo played this season were with Bumphis at quarterback.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you simply because I believe that this guy is a product of Gene's imagination. He completely blew his skill level out of proportion. Granted, he has a ton of potential, but this is the first year I really paid attention to him, and he was a total bust. Bumphis played better QB than he did.

if he gets much playing time there unless some unforseen events occur. Ones I know (and I sure as hell don't know all of 'em) tell me they don't understand why he signed with them, and they couldn't care less. Since Miles offered, guess he must know something that they don't.

Must say the Bama stuff is a little shocking considering all his other comments prior to the LSU switch. Kudos to Applewhite for being straight up with him.

4 or 5 star QB that they like a lot more than Garrett?

As bad as Jarret Lee was, I can't see Garrett beating him out.

Todd Jordan is a good comparison, except that Garrett probably isn't as good a punter.

I think Garrett could have come in and RS while Russell plays as a true Fr. And then by his senior year, he could have started for us, and maybe been a solid QB.

Now his best shot for playing time is to probably transfer to Delta State.

And here's what I don't get- he was pissed off at Croom for supposedly telling him that he was the only QB that we were going to recruit and then we went and got Russell, and yet he goes to a school that already has a five star QB committed, not to mention a guy in Jarrett Lee who will be a So. and Jefferson who will also be a So. I believe. He seriously thinks he can beat all of these guys out? Over Tyson Lee, Relf, and heck maybe even Russell? If I were him, I'd take my chances at State.

Ummmmm, how did he sign this past week? I thought only JUCO guys could sign early. Or else, Lawrence and Watts would be signing with us this week.

I'm just thinking-his Dad was a bigwig in the Mississippi State Bulldog Booster club up there in Tupelo. What did Mississippi State do to make this kid hate Mississippi State so much?</p>

got the bigger stick. Russell > Garrett. We were due at some point.

Garrett may well be an All-American at LSU but I doubt it. I doubt he play much, but I really don't care.

J Lee might be improved and Jefferson looked good last year as a true freshman. They will also have Hatch back. He will be at DSU in 2 years.

He still is a bigwig in it. And he also went on record in the Daily Journal saying what everyone already knew about the Croom situation and the Garrett reasoning behind decommitting.. they thought the offense was just not cutting it. He didn't say that directly about Garrett switching to LSU, but he said that in a column getting opinions from alumni when Croom was fired.

because how were they so sure that we were going to fire Croom after we won the Liberty Bowl and had 8 wins?

And heck, knowing the situation, wouldn't it be worth it to just wait and see what State does? That had to have known that we were going to go after an offensive guru after what we had to put up with.

Garrett is a typical prima donna that thinks that he is way better than he is.

It was just a comment that Garrett's dad said that was a downfall of Croom after a reporter asked his opinion of the situation. But you have to know.. They didn't know Croom was going to be axed at the time he switched his commitment to LSU and they were concerned that any QB that ran in that system was not going to be well coached and fail. The hire didn't matter to younger Garrett after he saw stars in his eyes when focusing on LSU and where they have been.
But screw it all anyway. For once in a long time, MSU looks like it will come out better off with that commitment change.
