I'm not sure what to expect, but I really didn't see a fall off at all with our team from a TEAM stand point. Matter of fact, that's probably better. I'm hoping that Jarvis can provide some interior scoring for us, but I don't see any way possible we'll be below 2nd or 3rd in a bad SECW

I think we have a very difficult SEC schedule personally...West is wide open this season

5. Mississippi State

The good: Jarvis Varnado is a shot-blocking center and exciting defensive presence. Hanging out in the paint, he can cover for a lot of mistakes. Barry Stewart is also back after averaging 11.5 points for a 23-win team.

The bad: Jamont Gordon was in such a hurry to leave college he didn't care that he wasn't a draftable prospect. Thus, he went undrafted and left Rick Stansbury trying to figure out how to replace three double-digit scorers -- Gordon, Charles Rhodes (exhausted eligibility) and Ben Hansbrough (transferred to Notre Dame).

The bottom line: Stansbury seems to always have good talent, but this is a down year by his standards. Given the roster, it's hard to imagine the Bulldogs being a factor in the West.

Nice jab at our all-everything, I think I'm a first rounder, J-Money, who is playing in Italy...

I think we finish 3rd or 4th in the West...
No props to Bost or Osby(who I saw out-play Green from Bama).
That's how we like it, no expectations or respect, MSU will earn it on the court..
This years team will be young and will have some growing pains, I just hope we make the NIT...

We have beatable east teams coming to the hump. We can't beat UT no matter where we play, so we might as well be on the road for that one. UGA, however, is a winnable road trip. UK takes us in Lexington. Thus, I see it as possible to go 4-2 vs the east and if we split in the west then we're 10-6.

That's my best case scenario, not what I think will happen. I have my doubts about this club. No real inside scoring threat, a true freshman point, shaky outside shooters, all lead me to believe that we'll struggle. I just don't see the SEC schedule as any more difficult than it ever is.

dont mean we will beat them. And for the reasons you gave- Freshman PG, lack of an offensive post presence, and spotty 3 pt shooting...

The start is the key every year. When I predicted us to go 1-8 Gordon's freshman year and all of you said I was crazy, it was because of youth and the start of the SEC schedule. Last year, we started off with injury decimated LSU team on the road, and 3 of the next 4 at home with a veteran group...Kentucky was having huge injury problems too...the start couldnt have been better

This year, we start off in FayetteNam, which is a tough place to play...Then Bama and Vandy. Bama has a good PG returning and Vandy teams tend to be tough on teams with little experience...then back on the road against LSU and Georgia...4 of the first 7 on the road with a young team may hamper us getting off to a good start like we need to.

Just my feeling on it...we'll see

slightly better than break even overall and maybe a little worse than that in the SEC. I could see us finishing anywhere from about 3rd to 5th in the SEC. Maybe I'm purposely setting my goals low this year, but when you have the unusual turnover in the program that we've had with starters the last two years (from transfers and early NBA entrants) its very hard to take a fairly new group and get the chemistry you need to do anything noteworthy. We have enough talent and athleticism to play well against anyone who will run with us but from what I've seen so far, experienced teams who slow the pace of the game down are going to give us fits. We will have trouble scoring out of the half court. No big time scorers inside and no deadly shooters from outside. Stewart and RJohnson are decent from the outside but they are not very consistent. In the exhibition game, Bost did not shoot very well from the outside but I'm hoping normally he is better. The one saving grace for this team is Varnado in the middle on defense. Not only does he erase easy baskets for the opposition, his blocks often start fast breaks for us.

is that the key to your SEC schedule is where you play the east teams.

I understand your position about the start and that we were fortunate last year. However, nobody knew last Nov we had a good draw. Looking back at the schedule, at LSU, UGA and UK at home, and then at UAT would be a 1-3 start many seasons. So, at ARK, Vandy and UAT at home, and then at LSU looks about the same to me.

We're going to struggle some this year no matter how the SEC schedule shakes out. If we go 8-8 in the SEC, I'll consider that an OK season

is that they're never as bad or as good as people predict them to be. They'll always be competitive and win games, but you can't call for them to win the conference, either.

who made it to the Elite 8 or Final 4. Can't remember. Thad Matta then got the job at Ohio State.

I want to say we were undefeated on the road that year in the SEC as well. It was nice winning an SEC Championship.

They lost to Duke in the regional final.

We lost to Xavier by 15. But I remember being pretty upset that we let them hang around in the first half before they finally got hot. We got up by 10 or so in the first half and then started playing stupid. It allowed them to hang around. Then they started making anything they threw up from behind the arc. ESPN's box score says they were 13-19.

And, yes, that was the year we were 8-0 on the road in the SEC. Lost to Kentucky and Alabama at home.

And the Xavier team that beat us was en fuego in March. They beat undefeated & #1 ranked St. Joseph in the A-10 tournament and then took Duke to the wire in the Elite 8 before losing a close one at the end.

Everyone forgets that. St. Joe's was undefeated and #1. And Xavier didn't just beat them, they hammered them by 20 after leading by 37 in the 2nd half. Xavier was a super-hot team. As I recall, they very nearly took out Duke in the Elite Eight as well.

minus the SEC Championship.

Only difference being, we didn't have Xavier at home and a best 2 out of 3. We beat the crap out of that same Xavier team in December. That's what makes that tourney loss sting just a little more.

I've always thought that both you and Texas got screwed by being paired in the same super regional. As it turned out, you got screwed. But if you'd won (which you very well could have), Texas would have been the one to get screwed.

I'm guessing your point is when we're picked high we're not as good, but when we're picked low we do better than that? That's how I interpreted your post.
