Would be my first choice behind Petersen, but I have a bad feeling this time next week Dooley will be our new HC. There is just to much smoke out there about him.

.......someone who's an upgrade from Croom, but I don't want to think we have a shot at one of the many "name" coaches that's being thrown around. I'd rather wait to see who it is, and then decide whether I like the hire or not.

about Dooley. His father was great etc etc. He has done ok at Ruston High in his two years there. Yes he beat us but who has not in the last five years? He needs more time there to prove himself and if GB hires him I will have lost a great deal of respect and confidence in him.

but if we waited for him to prove himself, he is going to be getting better job offers at that point. Auburn people love the guy.

We are probably going to be taking a chance to some degree on whoever we hire whether he's a head coach somewhere or a coordinator.

This is not a LT type of thought. It has to do with the fact that out AD has a list and we all know that Petersen was number one, now that he is out of the equation where do we go from here. I don't want Dooley, but I do believe that he is a candidate and a very serious one at that. Again I have no sources on this, just speculation, but there is a lot of smoke out there for him just to be an after thought.</p>

for his AD position there? I wonderful if his salary includes both the Head Coaching Job and the AD position? Maybe he's plaing for the future if the HC gig does not work out.

specifically concerning Dooley. Do you really think Dooley is at the top of Byrne's list? Of course not.

If we end up with Dooley, it will be because we didn't land the big names that have been discussed here. If we don't end up with Dooley, I firmly believe that another BCS school will within the next 3 years. That fact that so many people on here have predetermined that they will hate a Dooley hire is disturbing. I am not one of those that believes that this is our lot in life and we just can't compete in the coaching market, however, if we can't land the Kellys, Petersens, Pattersons, etc., I am fine with Dooley.

Basically, there are about 3-4 names that would be considered a "splash" by the prevailing standards here. In all likelihood, we may not get those coaches. Beyond that, you can play it safe and hire a retread OR hire a young coach before he hits the limelight. I am for the young coach.

Basically, it looks like this:

Petersen
Kelly
Patterson
Riley ?
Kevin Wilson
Derek Dooley

If you go down that list and offer each person and you end up with Dooley, so be it.

that is viable and not named Patterson, petersen or Kelly.

Chances are there is going to be some disappointment then.

Its not easy to go get someone else's head coach if you aren't a major power regardless of money. As I said, there is a good possibility that we will be taking a chance to some degree with this hire whether its Dooley, Kevin Wilson or Skip Holtz.

But if anyone can prove me wrong, its Byrne. (Yeah, I said it ole miss fans..start your whining "what has he done other than make an easy baseball hire????whaaaaa")

Dooley wouldn't be a terrible hire because he has been an assistant under some great coaches and of course grown up on football with his dad being so successful. But I had much rather have a proven head coach come in and win some games for us or a bigtime coordinator.

than croom. I still think he has another two years to prove himself. 5-7 last season and 7-5 this season with a Ga Tech 5th year transfer QB is not that impressive. I understand what you are saying 8 dog but I still feel that he is too big of risk but as you said if worst comes to worst I will welcome him and wish him the best. I just hope if some of these big name coaches turn Greg down at first that he does not take no for a answer.
