We are not Florida, Tennessee, Bama, etc. We don't have all the resources we could ever wish for at our disposal. At this point in our program, getting highly talented people to stop in for 3-5 years in leadership positions, do an outstanding job, and move on to something bigger and better is what we should be looking for. When we are competitive on the field again, we can start competing to retain that talent. I'm not discounting the value of stability in a program, but from where we are right now, I'm more interested in ability.

Mullen is going to be gone before long too, but I hope that he leaves us in much better shape than when he arrived and makes the head coaching position at MSU a position to build upon rather than re-build.

The swan lake mentality of preferring that we hire people who will die in a position at MSU really irritates me. We need people who are interested at growing in their careers, not ending them or riding them out. Right now, good people are going to outgrow us, but if we have enough good contributions that may not remain the case. This is what worries me about Joe Dean Jr.

but it's doing neither.

I stand by my theory that all collegiate sports jobs need a 3-5 year window for evaluation. And on the second point, we all know that Mullen and Cohen will most likely eventually succeed in Starkville. But to outside perception, it's "They had Greg Byrne and STILL lost. That's why he's leaving." Just like they would have said if Mullen had bolted to Florida.

in order for lasting changes to take root. We are in a precarious position now to slip right back to our same ol' same ol' mentality. Heck, we desparately needed Byrne to see us at least into the concrete beginnings of another football stadium expansion. Less than two years just isn't enough time to get things really rolling.

I just hope that Greg's decision was strictly based on his own career choice and not spurred on by still having LT around to cause dissension. Based on rumors here and just feeling I know the personalities of folks like LT and Polk, it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't keeping things uncomfortable enough for Byrne to where he just felt like it wasn't worth it when he had an equal or better opportunity come along. People with egos like LT and Polk don't take kindly to being spurned.
