First off, Martinez was fired. A buddy of mine, UGA Grad., is quite intimate w/ the their program. Last time I saw him I asked him about Richt and the grumblings that are becoming louder in this area. He broke it down for me pretty well, I thought: he said it's understandable and expected that their offense wasn't as potent as last year, b/c they lost both Stafford and Moreno to the draft. However, he said most UGA fans that had a clue would have beef w/ Martinez instead. Every year, since 2005, under the direction of Martinez, the points per game average that his defenses allowed increased incrementally every single year.

We don't want Martinez.

Simply because he got fired as a head coach, not as a DC. Plus, he's probably motivated to be a HC again, so he'll want to make a good impression as a DC.

Brick Haley or Tommy West.. I hadn't thought about West until now, but that just might be a good hire. On top of his defensive mind, he could get us that in-road to Memphis talent and tear down that "fence that Orgeron built."

He's too old and headstrong to put up with Mullen. Assuming the stories of Mullen's approach his assistant's are true, I seriously doubt Tommy West would make a good fit. I like Tommy West and think he'd make a solid DC at a program, but not this one. He would commit to his methodology and butt heads with Mullen if they disagreed. We are in our current position for that very reason.

I say go with Diaz - the young guy who has a style Mullen has already commented on as being impressed. That doesn't necessarily guarantee Mullen and Diaz would mesh well, but the chances of it happening are higher than a guy like West.

will be a successful DC somewhere, either MSU or someplace else. The guy knows what he's doing. He has worked his way up the ranks and is approaching the age and experience level to move to that level.

I got to know Brick a little bit when he was here. He is passionate about what he does. He was a heck of a recruiter because he was personable and knew how to talk to kids and their families. Brick, and we've all known someone like him, is the kind of guy that draws you to him....somebody you just enjoy to be around. He was a good DL coach because he knew X's and O's and how to put them and his players in position to be successful. This, along with another important factor.....the respect he would get from his players giving their all for him, will make him a successful DC.

I wouldn't mind it being at MSU.

We could do a lot worse than Tommy West. But, he doesn't seem to fit the mold Mullen is looking for. He is a 4-3 guy and likes to send pressure but he isn't the hardest working recruiter out there. On paper, it doesn't seem like a good fit. I do know he has a strong dislike for OM though.

I think it was Willie Evans who told Deljuan(sp) Robinson, "do whatever Brick tells you and you will be OK".

I'd like to see Brick Haley come back as DC. I'm kinda going out on a limb assuming he could do it. There is a big diff between coordinator and position coach.

...be willing to coach LB's? I know he was the DL coach for us when he was here. But I've not tried to look up his coaching resume. Has he coached LB's before? I like Brick. Plus he's got the coolest name of the potential DC's too.

He was actually coaching the linebackers at Georgia Tech when Croom hired him; he also coached linebackers at Clemson and Houston before that.

Never understood why he left the Bears for to be a position coach at LSU. Would think being a pro position coach would be better that a college position coach. Can someone enlighten me?

I saw that and am going to assume they meant Dick Bumpas until said poster tries to defend the Patterson suggestion, which may have already happened.

before. I'm going to try and find the stats for when he was DC at Baylor. I'd say he left the Bears because he missed the college game and wanted to work with his old coach, Chavis. I think Brick would be a really good hire. I'm not sure if that is the direction Mullen will go. I'm just not convinced that Diaz is the guy we want.

from the past. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we get Heater. Mullen was with Heater at Utah and Florida. He has my ok as being our DC.

If it's not Heater, I think we take or should take Diaz.

that guy knows everything and he has never been wrong. just imagine having a DC that knows what the other team is going to run on every play. it will look like when you pick the right play on Tecmo Bowl. I just gave myself chills.

if a man can create the Spread offense and then teach it to middle schoolers in Charleston, just imagine what he could do with SEC caliber players.

Brick left the Bears because he's a college guy....just likes "teaching" college aged kids how to play. That's what makes him such a good coach and earns him the respect of his players. That, along with being a southern boy.....

From the "Did you know department"......

When Brick left for Chicago, his wife and children stayed in S'ville for over a year because they liked the town and schools so much.

By the way....it hasn't been mentioned, but he has inquired about the position.

MTSU was our fourth-lowest offensive output of the year. We only had fewer yards against Alabama, Florida, and Auburn.

Did Tommy West take the Rick Comegy approach to recruiting; going after guys who quit other teams? Seems to me he had a lot of transfers sitting out, waiting to get eligible to play. I could be wrong.

He's too beat down from his experience in Memphis to be productive. Dan will kill him. Also, he's a ****** recruiter. DeAngelo was a fluke.

Thank for the enlightenment. I would be happy to have Brick, but Dan hasn't called me to seek my consultation. However, I am sure he has spoken with several of the six pack posters to seek their input.

Diaz typically gets his D to play at a high level for their talent. If they are playing teams with much more talent, they tend to get beat up. When they play teams with equal or lesser talent, his defense is stellar. And they were put in horrible positions by Dasher this year numerous times.

If he can maximize his talent at MT, you would expect him to be able to do the same and better with MSU caliber talent.
