Geoff Calkins.. Seldom has a writer scathed as deeply as this:

On the bright side, Mississippi State also scored 31 in the first half against Ole Miss. So the Tigers aren’t any worse than the Rebs

I mean yeah their terrible, but where's the news in that? Their offense did look more dynamic than last year, even if it was against our 2nd and 3rd teamers.<div>
</div><div>The way Memphis media constantly dogs out everything associated with their football team is going to go a long way in bringing in a great young coach or AD. Not to mention help ticket sales too.</div>

I feel like a survivor of some dreaded illness (crxxms disease) watching a casual acquaintance suffering from essentially the same disease (incompetitis) and knowing by experience that they have a long, slow and painful convalescence period ahead of them. Dearest Ole Memp, I have nothing but sympathy for you.

and he is right that memphis is flat out embarrassing. I thought Geoff had some memorable quotes in there to top it off.

And knowing all along, that they probably don't have the means to treat the illness adequately even when they choose too.

He speaks the truth, but walking into the locker room surrounded by players, coaches, the AD, etc. after that article doesn't sound very appealing to me.

Rick Cleveland would never write this. He'd probably be defending Porter and the AD and just pushing it to the fans (which Calkins also did earlier in the week anyway).

I stopped scratching my head though when I remembered that there were more State fans there than Memphis

Everyone lay of Larry will you. Sure the team has a way to go- but look who
we were playing. I am CERTAIN that if we had played Ole Siss- the game would
have been close into the 4th quarter. If only we could schedule the Black Bears
instead of State.</p>

Rick Cleveland, the fine Mississippi columnist, wandered over and asked me if I had ever seen a worse Division 1 team.
Say what you want about Rick Cleveland, but he's been around for a long time and he's seen a lot of bad football teams.

Yep, on West.

Memphisis a perfect case study ona middle class college football program being left behind because of the increased wealth of the Big$ Conferences and changes in Big$ Conference scheduling.Back before the widespread TV coverage, TV money, and 8 SEC game schedule. Memphis did ok versus SEC teams. The series with us wasbasically even until the late 90s. They beat Arkansas a few times in the 90s. They beat UF at Gainesville in the late 80s. Back, then a kid go up there and live in the big city, play SEC teams, and not play in TV like anywhere else. They landed a few big recruits back then. But now, the kids they might have had a chance to recruit.......see State, OM, and etc. on ESPN, see their terrible schedule withtrips to Jonesboro instead of Knoxville or Gainesville, and that city isn't as attractive as it use to be.....tough situation for them.
