Reid’s dismissal marks latest misstep by former Georgia high school stars

Greg Reid, the Georgia all-classification player of the year in 2008 while at Lowndes in Valdosta, was kicked off Florida State’s football team on Wednesday. Reid is the latest in a string of recent former Georgia high school stars whose careers have been stained by off-field problems.
Since 2006, there have been at least 14 of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s 55 preseason Super 11 players to be arrested or dismissed from teams for major misconduct. That’s not counting the 2011 players, just now entering school. It also doesn’t count several Super 11 players who have transferred or been dismissed over academic and lesser off-the-field problems.
Some arrests were more serious than others, and a few have picked up the pieces and begun to thrive. But here are the 14, with the season in which each was an AJC Super 11 pick:
2006 – Caleb King, a running back from Greater Atlanta Christian, was arrested in April on suspicion of third-degree assault in the beating of another man after a party. According to the local sheriff’s department, the victim suffered skull and facial fractures. King left Georgia in 2011 when declared academically ineligible. He moved on to the NFL and the Minnesota Vikings but was released after the arrest.
2006 – Rennie Curran, a linebacker from Brookwood, was considered a class act on and off the field during his time as an all-SEC linebacker at Georgia, so it came as a surprise in 2011 when he and a female companion were charged with simple battery after an altercation in Buckhead. Charges reportedly were dropped. Curran had been released recently by the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
2007 – Josh Jarboe, a wide receiver, signed with Oklahoma but never made it there. While a senior at Cedar Grove, he was charged with receiving stolen property and having a gun at his high school. He went to Troy instead, but was kicked off the team in 2010 after being cited by police twice for disorderly conduct. Jarboe wound up at Arkansas State, where he’s doing well. Jarboe had 54 catches last season and is an NFL prospect.
2007 – Dontavius Jackson, a running back from Heard County, was at Georgia in 2009 when charged with DUI and suspended six games. Jackson has moved on to UAB, where he is a contender to start this fall.
2007 – Also in the car with Jackson in 2009 was Tavarres King, a receiver from Habersham Central. He was charged with underage alcohol possession. King remains at Georgia and is an All-SEC candidate.
2008 – Branden Smith, a cornerback from Atlanta’s Washington High, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in Alabama in March. He remains a starter at Georgia. It was reported that he could face a game suspension in 2012, but none has been announced.
2008 – Greg Reid, a defensive back and running back from Lowndes, was dismissed at FSU on Wednesday. He was arrested in July for misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license. It was his second arrest in a year, although charges in the first case – resisting arrest and perjury – were dropped.
2008 – Washaun Ealey, a running back from ECI, was arrested in 2010 for hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license. He was suspended for a game. Previously, he had been cited for speeding and vehicle registration charges. Ealey transferred to Jacksonville State, where he rushed for 1,082 yards last season.
2008 – Darren Myles Jr., a defensive back from Carver in Atlanta, was dismissed from Tennessee in 2010 in the aftermath of a bar brawl in Knoxville. He was charged with assaulting a university police officer and resisting and evading arrest. Myles transferred to a junior college.
2009 – Also arrested with Myles was receiver Da’Rick Rogers of Calhoun. A charge of disorderly conduct was dropped, and Rogers was sentenced to community service for resisting arrest. Rogers, an All-America candidate, had 67 receptions for 1,040 yards last season.
2009 – Tai-ler Jones, a receiver from Gainesville, was arrested with 10 other Notre Dame players for underage drinking at a party in South Bend, Ind., in 2010. Jones, now known as T.J. Jones, caught 38 passes in 2011 and has been named a preseason candidate for the Biletnikoff Award.
2009 – Alec Ogletree, a safety from Newnan and starting linebacker at Georgia, was arrested on a misdemeanor theft-by-taking charge in 2010 and suspended for a game. Ogletree is now a starting linebacker at Georgia. It has been reported that he might face a suspension in 2012 for breaking team rules, but Georgia has made no announcement.
2010 – Isaiah Crowell, a running back from Carver in Columbus, was arrested in June and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon in a school zone and an altered identification. In 2010, he had been suspended for failing a drug test, according to the AJC. The recent arrest prompted Georgia to kick Crowell off the team. He transferred to Alabama State.
2010 – Nick Marshall, a quarterback from Wilcox County, was dismissed at Georgia earlier this year after he and a teammate were caught stealing money out of another teammate’s dorm room, it was reported. Marshall enrolled in February at Garden City Community College in Kansas.
