That's apparently one theory......I certainly hope that's not the case, because it would almost too hard to fathom.

It's a crazy story. I was just reading on CNN the events. Seems the Co-pilot locked out the Captain and put the plane into a descent.

That's horrible and terrifying.

Reading that he locked the Captain out and because of the reinforced doors they have now because of 9-11 the Captain couldn't get back in.

Alternate Theory

The pilot done it. How did they make the distinction? Is there a control that would tell us which seat was empty?

Obviously the cockpit door will open automatically after 5 minutes unless someone sitting in a cockpit seat presses a button to override the auto feature to open the door. Hard to fathom that someone could lock the controls into decent and sit there nine minutes with people kicking and pounding on the door.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), I believe the Captain is said to be heard screaming in the background as part of the cockpit's voice recording. I'm also getting the impression that if someone occupying the cockpit purposely wants to keep everyone out, the onboard security system and door armoring is designed to do just that.

Also...

I was at the gym so I couldn't hear the TV just a little bit ago. So this probably isn;t exactly accurate...

They were saying that the door lock has three modes. (open, normal and locked). There is a key pad and with the code you can override. But the person on the inside has 30 seconds to either unlock the door, keep the door locked or if nothing is done the door automatically becomes unlocked.
