Gerry did not kill it at the combine.

At least in the testing anyways. Solid numbers, but certainly nothing spectacular. Haven't had a chance to watch him in positional drills though.

4.58 in the 40
17 reps of 225
30.5 inch vert
10'2 broad jump

Thought he was much faster than that. Iowa's TE ran that two days ago.

The bench press is so worthless, I can't believe they still use it.

What would you use to measure strength then? The inclined bench press would be better.

I agree. When would you ever bench press for 17 reps, let alone 30+?

Bench press is the realm of the short-armed tough guy. "How much can you bench, dude?" I simply don't believe it has much to do with football strength, explosiveness, etc. Yeah, it's an important part of a lifting regime, but for comparing athletes? No. I miss the days of seeing some guy with three plates on each side making a huge show of it, then literally moving the bar up and down 2 inches while bouncing it off his chest.

He plays very fast in pads. Straight line speed, he is as fast as many CBs. I've seen him catch at least a few WRs from behind. Where he struggles, IMO, is with his lateral movement.

His numbers aren't horrible, but not good for someone who had a lot of question marks in other areas. He needed to blow them away with his testing numbers and didn't really do that. His numbers were pretty average for his position.

It shows you workout and have strength. I doubt teams put too much stock into it unless it is glaringly high or low.

In the NFL, being good at running people down from behind isnt spun into a positive quite like it is here.

I'm still not a fan of the 40 times. I wouldput much more stock in the pro agility or other 3 cone type drills. Or have them run an obstacle course of some type.

He may not make it in the NFL, but there is always that rocket science background as a backup plan.

He didn't kill it, but he didn't hurt himself unless the interviews went poorly.

Was surprised that he only jumped 30 inches. Thought he would run closer to 4.5 than 4.6 but 4.58 is not bad at all for a guy some teams are talking about playing a LB role.

If you look at Gerry's numbers compared to the safety most draftniks are touting as a top 5 pick, they are almost exactly the same. Some guys have Jamal Adams as high as the number three pick, and he ran a 4.56, jumped 31 inches, and repped 18 times. He's smaller than Gerry as well.

Read post 15 again. The article tells a different story than what you are hoping for.

I actually thought he looked pretty good in the drills. Not a big fan of his last year at NU but writers calling him "stiff" I think are misrepresenting what I saw to be really crisp cuts and good explosiveness. The whole dodging class thing would be a huge red flag for me if I were a GM. The kid has a good football IQ so I think he'll find a home somewhere even if he's a late round or FA pick up. The whole "Bo-tox" attitude shouldn't be a problem for him in the pros like I think it was at NU.

I am glad you thought he looked good. Apparently the scouts, coaches and decision makers quoted in the Yahoo story thought otherwise.

Because they never blow smoke about a guy trying to lower his draft stock hoping him to get him later in the draft? The NFL network guys that I heard comment on him were not nearly as critical of him as what I've read on this board. We'll find out what they really think on draft day. I do remember posting that after his class dodging that he might not get drafted at all but being "stiff" in drills isn't as big of a deal for a head hunter like Gerry as it would be for a corner.

With the number of athletic TEs increase in the NFL, safeties are going to have to be more fluid and better in coverage.

I seriously doubt multiple GMs, scouts and coaches are trying to lower the value of a safety already slated to be a 3rd day guy. His guaranteed money is already nearly non existent. I could see that point if he were projected as a second round pick and they were trying to get him for less in the third round.

The interviews and the drug test questions are hurting him more than the stiff hips.

Gerry's VJ is a huge disappointment. I think he jumped higher as a freshman. This is only 1 guy but it makes me wonder if we're developing "explosion" in S&C or not.
