I have worked for my employer 23 years total and did some Good things, even was an innovator. This past year iit seemed like they began piling much more on me and I am now Fatter then I ever have been. My wife and kids complain about me taking my work home and I am just plain miserable....5 hours of sleep a night, Dreading Every week starting...Just hate my job. I really don't want to leave my coworkers in a lurch, but it will not get Better there. I have no jobs lined up and tomorrow I get disciplined for missing reports I hsave to make copies of because they can be Lost by clerical people. I'm 57 years old. Thoughts...Bretheren?

Ouch. Hope you have some contacts for reasonable expectations of a comparable position. I have had miserable jobs that I walked away from, but not at your age. Hopefully you can find something more to your liking. I would advise against anticipating what you think may come out of the meeting for reprimand. Think positive and show a good attitude and try to be graceful regardless of outcome. And it probably wouldn't hurt to say a little prayer tonight and seek guidance.

Thoughts...Bretheren?

First, don't take a reprimand as the end of employment. Don't even take it as a necessarily a negative. As said earlier, have a good attitude, and do self-assess, can you make improvements where they are asking you to, or are they asking too much?

Think first of why you do what you do. First of course is to feed the family and put a roof over their heads, but reasons 2-4 are what I would concentrate on. Is this job meeting your needs for that? If not, don't just up and quit. Gaps in employment, even a few months, are a negative. Keep doing your job, and find something while employed. Keep you mouth shut about it until you have a signed agreed to offer and acceptance.

I would keep doing my best and let them fire me. You may need to collect unemployment between jobs. 23 years at one place will make you appealing to the right employer. Get a lawyer's advice and pay attention to who replaces you. Start recording details while they are freshest in your mind.

Thanks all....let me clarify though...second reprimand...after the first, I grieved it showed improvement...then Boom....same problem reemerged. Now i want to tell you, I would like a Change. I have some irons in the fire as in applications out there....I could be cordial meanwhile but this is a position soon to be Federally monitored....July 1....so....I'm Done unless i can pull my *** out of the Fire....The job is not great....I lose a lot of sleep...I'm big and Fat....a rarity for me....and hate my job. So, firing would be the best case....retiring early...a pipe dream...quitting....have not done with no place to go since my twenties.

Nothing good comes from burning the bridge... unless it's already on fire.

Stay as long as you can take it and start looking for a replacement job.

You have two months until July 1st.

Lots of good advice in this thread...
Get a lawyer's advice and pay attention to who replaces you.

Tell them of your concerns with how you're being treated and how it impacts performance overall. Sometimes Employers need to hear what they are doing wrong, whether they want to hear it or not. Be honest and sincere.

We are giving suggestions without all the facts. Are you financially secure for life? If so, you are the one in charge of the situation. Can you do without the benefits from the job? Insurance in particular. You may be wise to chat with SS if you are not well versed.

Also, we do not know the type work you do - labor, skilled, supervisor or exec? Regardless of what the politicians and statistics say, the job market is still tight. It is actually very tight at your age. Is relocation a possibility?

I am closely associated with a man who is 50. He has applied for job openings. Excellent worker and clean as a pin. But he has been turned down for all positions that he is fully qualified for. He has been a bit emotionally hurt because he says he has never been turned down for any job for which he applied until he approached 50 years of age. I would stake my life on the integrity of the gentleman. And, he is a physical specimen - over 6' and totally solid and very athletic and outstanding academics.

Do hope everything ends the way you would want.

Sounds like you are already performing at a level lower than you coworkers have grown to expect. Sounds like the decisions have been made. Now is the time to get employment assessment and counseling to determine what is the BEST immediate move for you. Being a disconnected third party I CANNOT comment on anything specific. Problem bay be the boss; may be the type of job; may be unrelated to the boss or job; may be related to your aging; on and on. GO SEE A PROFESSIONAL who can deal with all the aspects. If the first person you seek advice from seems to not fully appreciate you situation be quick to locate another. GET PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE---NOW.

"Before you go in to "the confrontation say these EXACT WORDS"Peace Be Unto This House"...I have faced MANY employment "situations",and some personal omes with my former in-laws..and this quote from the book of Mathew, (when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead)..WORKS! !!.. I open my prayers with it and enter my rest with this quote..The most important thing to do when entering your situation is to VERBALLY say this out loud...it will totally confound and utterly confuse those that are trying to harm you and yours..

look at your last 5 evaluations. This should give you an idea as to your value to the employer. The higher the performance rating, and how consistent it has been, is likely an indicator of whether the employer needs you or will want to keep you.

There is nothing stopping you from seeking guidance from those who evaluate you. Periodic evaluations prior to your annual evaluation is a great opportunity to communicate to your supervisors/leaders, etc. You certainly would add value if you were seeking self improvement for the sake of the business. If you hate your job, but need it, a change in attitude about the job might save it. I tell everyone I evaluate I seek interpersonal adaptability more so than technical expertise. Getting along is paramount. You can be the best at a skill but the worse socially. We have this message board as an example.

Lose weight, then the wife and let them fire you. Collect unemployment and have Obama, the govt, take care of you . just joking, hope things work out. Doesn't sound like a good situation.

Thanks again! I think departing it is inevitable...just when....my health right now is Fair....Tomorrow is a meeting which might clue me in to my fate....but I know it. I've been complaining, feeling like quitting, dreading going to the place for some weeks now. Being fired would be best....but if not....I may retire anyway....I don't like it...just not into it anymore....and I'm older, more invested in home and my wife and kids...so.July 1, 2016 they tell us there is when we go under some real monitoring and Federal guidelines for what we do...We have a small staff...and tons of work and aggravation. Might be the right time. I'll let u know.

Don't quit. You will need the unemployment.

So Atreides? All went fairly well today I hope? ....
Indeed some very good advise from several in this here post...I have had a few employment prospects / thoughts as a 21 year employee of the same company which has grown considerably over the last 5-10 years...I'm not sure what I'm waiting for but the time is nigh ...I had one hell of a prospect that I just missed out on, gotta get back on that horse and stay motivated...not the same as it used to be (a smaller family run operation) with my current employer, although they have been loyal to keep me gainfully employed all these years and I appreciate that greatly....I always appreciate your honest and unbiased opinion on the board for the record re: all things Mountaineers...the board needs more like you...

Thanks for your post. No my update basically is I'm in a holding pattern. Looking for another place to land and hanging in until I get that new job. My letter of discipline is with Human Resources. I'm on another workplan...and treading water....till another thing happens. My attitude is not the problem. I have a job that as a 57 year old fellow....they would hope to push me out in favor of a much younger and energized young man. I'm older, I tell it like it is....I have already ripped my boss just telling her my thoughts and not profanely. I've been here 23 years. Seen a lot of people come and go. I think my turn is just around the corner. I'm not waiting just biding time for that next job. Think i might want to work at Costco...Lowes or some place I can just use my physical strength....As for the board. I wish they would revamp the free board....too much trolling....and its boring. Pray for me.
