The hand ball was probably (haven't been able to see a clear replay) was alast resort to stop a sure winning goal with no time left. He gave his team another chance... it worked out for him.

I don't know if they ever showed that angle on a replay but it's pretty clear to me that he could've gotten his head behind the ball. With that said though, in that split second, you unconsciously make the decision that while you MIGHT be able to head it out, you can DEFINITELY punch it out.
