Glad to see some great commits but...

I'm sure everyone forgot when signing day was, and is getting lost in a monster that they think is no longer the same poor ole MSU. Thanks for the reminder...

I'd contend that it doesn't mean much until their 3rd/4th year on campus when we can make adequate evaluations on kids' ceilings. There's a whole bunch of 2*s and low 3*s in that 2011 class that have made a mockery of the ratings system in how good they actually are.

It doesn't mean **** until they start producing on the field. I've seen way too many hyped up 4* and 5* players who weren't worth a **** and too many 2* players who were great players to get too worked up over recruiting, good or bad. And before I get all the star worshipers commenting, I do agree that in general the more stars the better.

Amen, I don't even want to hear a players name until Jim and Matt are

announcing it as he trots out onto the field for the 1st time, much less what we get now which is middle schoolers and 10th graders we are "on" (thats kind of a creepy term). Everybody needs a hobby but keeping up w/ 'cruitin news isn't mine.

Seems we get commitments from plenty of skill players. I'm wondering when we are going to get commitments from quality offensive linemen. Appears to me Mullen has ignored that part of the team since he has been here, or he has coaches who are incapable of getting good players for the OL.

So I shouldn't get excited because we are now winning in recruiting too?********

Is it just me, though, or does it seem like there aren't nearly as many "reaches" as we're used to seeing in a signing class? Granted, I'm sure that there will be some underachievers or transfers with this class just like there always are, but it's nice to see us getting to the point where there's clearly a Plan B and C if Plan A doesn't work out. At least, that's what seems to be happening on paper

Now if we can just get the kicking game shored up and add some depth at O line, we'll really be talking

For something that seems like it could be easily remedied such as the kicking game, we have sucked at it for most of Mullen's career.

And I've yet to be able to put a finger on it as to why. Is it poor evaluations, poor/non-existent coaching, or just Mullen's stubborn tendency to stick with something that isn't working? All I know is that if I had a kicker that was 43% overall in FGs including 2/9 from 30+... well, I would have never had a kicker with those stats because he would have never lasted that long.

Deep had lunch with Manny Diaz a couple of months ago and he belly

laughed about all the four and five stars he had at Texas. He said the system is a joke. If Texas signed a player he damn near always got upgraded and his biggest problem at Texas was the talent. He said he had better talent at MSU.

Based on what Paul, Robbie and Steve are saying, we should get 2-3 OL commits before the season starts. That would put us at 4, and we can put the remaining eggs in Javon Patterson's bucket and see what happens.

Maybe that speaks well of what our coaches think about the ones we already have (I hope)

Which is why they didn't have anyone drafted this year on D, did they? If they did, it was late.

It's because we've been recruiting this class for so long. When Brewster was hired, the first thing he said was "oh my god, you're way behind in evaluating." It isn't a coincidence that we started getting 2015 and 2016 kids that summer.

Fast forward two years later, and those extended relationships are paying off.

Agreed to the fact that stars don't mean ****. I'm sure on some scale it can measure a player's talent. But it never measures how good a player can and will be on a college football scale.

As for special teams, I just hope we don't see the same ole stubborn Mullenesque ********. I don't want to hear this, "But he did so great in practice" nonsense. It'll be interesting to see how Knox handles actual scheming of special teams. He won't have any effect on the kickers but actual scheming will be interesting to watch this year. It lies on the shoulders of the returners a good bit, but imagine if we really had a strong kickoff return team. What if we brought it out to the 30-35 every time? That translates into points. Food for thought...

I felt at the time like giving Knox special teams was just a lazy approach to "dealing with an obvious problem". I thought we should have hired a dedicated ST/TE coach and rotated Sallach back off the field. After reading a little about Knox learning ST and having a role with the 04 Auburn squad I mainly remember for 14-0 and excellent special teams, I think it's a wait-and-see approach...

One thing I want to see is more explosiveness. We seem to play ST "safe" instead of using it as an opportunity to steal games like Jackie did. Once you've seen Jackie's style of ST, it's incredibly hard to watch anything less...

Exactly. And that was AU's MO during Tubby's time there. Although Knox didn't specifically coach ST there, I hope Knox picked up some of that philosophy.
