For the final night of Middle School/JV doubleheader action, Riverheads traveled over to Waynesboro tonight, where they split a pair of games with the home team. I only watched by tape delay but will try to give you at least a general idea of what transpired.
Waynesboro, which I assume means Kate Collins, won the Middle School game 33-24. From the scores I saw, they must have been in control all along, whereas it appears that Riverheads kept it close by scoring a successful two-point conversion after each of their three touchdowns. With the loss, the Gladiators finish the season with a 4-4 record, a good start for the new concept.
In the JV game, Riverheads won 30-8 for their eighth-straight win. The only blemish on their record was a 14-12 loss in the season-opener at East Rock, where they scored late but came up short on the conversion. I am told that there will be a game played later this week between the RHS JVs and the top team from the Valley District, but I have not seen the details on that yet.
As for tonight's victory, I won't be able to give individual credit to any Big Red players because I was watching online and it was tough to see the numbers. Also the PA announcer only called Waynesboro players by name, but one name I heard often tonight was Blair. For those of you who know Waynesboro football history, that is an almost legendary name, and from what I could tell, this Mr. Blair will make sure his name is in the record books by the time he leaves Waynesboro. He was all over the field tonight, throwing halfback option passes, reversing his field on running plays, and doing whatever he could for his team. More often than not, it took an army of Gladiators to bring him down.
So if he played such a great game for Waynesboro, you may be wondering how did Riverheads win the game so easily? As near as I could tell, there were two factors.............A) Waynesboro could not stop the RHS running game, to the point that the Gladiators did not even have to think about throwing a pass, allowing them to score at will.........and B) Waynesboro was its own worst enemy in terms of penalties and turnovers.
Riverheads picked off two Little Giant passes, one coming on a deflection. But the real difference in the game had to be the flags. Every time the Giants tried to get a drive going, they were hit with a major penalty. In one case in the third quarter, it appeared as if they might have had two penalties on the same play. All of that activity kept them from developing any kind of rhythm in the game.
I cannot tell you anything about the fourth quarter because my stream of the game froze up completely. But I do know that all the scoring took place in the first three quarters. So as mentioned above, let's next see where things go with that Valley District exhibition game.
Meanwhile it sounds like things were kind of wild in the Gladiator gym tonight. The girls volleyball team was in action in the first round of the Region 1-B playoffs against Altavista. The match went five sets, with Riverheads winning the final one 15-11. They will now travel to Luray for a regional semi-final match, and I presume the usual format will apply, meaning the winner of that one will play for the regional championship, but also advance to the state tournament.
