This year's experimental Middle School/JV doubleheaders continue to be a popular draw as a nice crowd at Riverheads tonight saw the Gladiators take a pair of victories away from Wilson. Elsewhere according to our announcer Buffalo Gap and Fort Defiance were battling one another as were Stuarts Draft and Rockbridge.
At RHS, a strong but fortunately quick storm blew through just as the MS game was about to begin. But it did not impact the game or leave any lasting damage on the field. In fact the home team jumped right on visiting Wilson, scoring three first quarter touchdowns on the way to a 38-0 win. Seventh-grader Kalvin Huffer continues to be a leader in the RHS offense as he tallied three of the first four Big Red scores. The game was under control early enough for the second stringers to get more action than the starters, much to the delight of those families.
The JV game was a rather odd affair as Wilson rallied from behind twice to tie the score at 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter. However the Gladiators exploded for three fourth-quarter TDs, leading to a somewhat deceiving 37-14 win. The Hornets were effectively done in by their own mental errors as they failed to cover consecutive kick-offs in that quarter. Riverheads pounced on the loose ball both times and eventually took them in for clinching touchdowns.
The Gladiators relied on a quartet of scorers as Colston Wheeler, Cason Croft, Gage Hutton, and Tanner McCray all scored either TDs or two-point conversions. McCray had perhaps the most memorable moment as he returned a kickoff untouched for a score early in the second quarter. Also having a highlight moment was place-kicker Aiden Davis who nailed a perfect PAT after the final Gladiator score.
Wilson showed a couple of weapons in the person of quarterback Cole Kindig and running back Christopher Wallace. Kindig is the freshman quarterback who has now been tapped to lead the Hornet varsity squad due to the starter being injured. He played the first and third quarters tonight and will presumably be allowed to play at least part of the varsity game tomorrow night. Not sure about how that all works but you can bet the coaches are on top of it.
With the win, the RHS JVs are 3-1 with their only blemish being a two-point loss to East Rockingham. The next Middle School/JV doubleheader for the Big Red should be Thursday night October 9th when they will travel to Fort Defiance.
