What bothers me is that this is the second time in a few years that the VHSL leadership has unilaterally made changes that fundamentally changes the makeup of HS athletics in Virginia.

The biggest concern I have is enforcing recruiting allegations/violations. According to Ken Tilley there is not a plan currently in place to account for the Pandora's box they've opened. Relying on school's self reporting has never been a good idea but as new private schools are added an enforcement branch really needs to be considered a priority. I don't feel like LCA will stoop to the level of recruiting seen in other states. That being said, schools need to know they're being watched so they're not tempted to cross that line. That's not just for LCA that's all schools.

I don't think they will either because everyone will be paying more attention now especially to LCA, that is just what I heard an assistant coach say and not from Amherst either, Another Seminole district assistant coach who I know

Thanks for posting Mike.

I agree with Phantom's comment. The VHSL executives will argue that the members ultimately voted to approve the plan to admit LCA and future privates. But, that was a no brainier.

I'm of the opinion that self reporting is the lesser of the evils. I am afraid that a committee to seek out violations will become a self fore-filling prophesy. They would have to keep finding problems to validate their existence.

The VHSL needs an enforcement arm when it comes to recruiting. schools have been recruiting for years and got away with it. I personally know of several over the years, some local, some in other parts of the state. In the past, the VHSL has turned and looked away and done nothing.
99% of the time, when a star athlete transfers, recruiting is involved. Maybe by coaches, maybe by booster club members, maybe by rogue AAU coaches, and maybe by "street agents".
If a school is caught recruiting, that school should be banned from post season for 5 years.

But, would not the existence of such a commitee lessen the likelyhood of recruiting? Personally, I would like to see such a group. Without a group to enforce, why would anyone have to follow the rules? It's like Law without Police. Everyone can drive 100 MPH with impunity. no one is at the end of the phone for a 911 call. That's where the VHSL is.

The Honor system is fine but it's clearly abused. I again call for every District in the State to pull the numbers in their respective areas on transfers and act accordingly.
