Glen Van Proyen, 86, formerly of Chicago, passed away Dec. 1, 2016.

He was a graduate of Pullman Tech in Chicago, where he was later inducted into the Pullman Tech Hall of Fame.

Glen earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Illinois University, where he was a two-sport standout in baseball and basketball. He went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University.

Glen met and fell in love with Nancy, and they married in 1952. Together they lived in Glen Ellyn, Illinois; West Chicago; Door County, Wisconsin; and DeBary.

Mr. Van Proyen had a baseball career that spanned 50 years. He was drafted by the St. Louis Browns, and played four years in their minor-league system.

He was a teacher and a football and baseball coach at Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, for 30 years.

Glen was a mentor to a great many students and athletes. He was a longtime basketball referee who worked several Illinois state-championship tournaments and was inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame.

He was a highly respected professional baseball scout for 46 years, working 35 years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and 11 years with the Chicago Cubs.

This makes me sad...a truly great guy and huge in Park Ridge (not just MS) baseball long ago...
