Here is the article from Vice for whoever wants to read it. A relevant line is this:

"Essentially, the Arctic ice, because of climate change, is having its thickness reduced which in turn allows the ice to become more mobile. The ice was able to escape the Arctic to the Labrador current and make its way south."

In other words, there wasn't thick chunks of ice at sea because it's getting colder but rather because the warming is allowing the chunks of ice to break off and float around.
