Dukes had one win last year but moved from the Peninsula District to the Bay Rivers District, which now has 11 teams.

Gloucester made the playoffs in 2023 with 3 wins. Does moving to the Bay Rivers improve their playoff chances?

Marginally, I would say. Bay Rivers is made up of a majority of smaller schools than the Peninsula District schools. This, on paper anyway, gives them a slightly more level playing field. Hopefully, this change will be the catalyst to improve their play and be more competitive.

On the flip side, the “marginal” teams in the Peninsula will have one less “automatic” win this season.

Gloucester has about 1,700 students. They just never competed well against the PD teams. If they play in the playoffs, they will have to play in the AAAAA bracket. Correction, Gloucester had about 1,700 students. Now they are slightly above 1,500.

According to the schedule they are listed as Class 4 this year, playing in Reg A.

I’m not sure where HR got that from, but Gloucester is Class 4.
They will compete in Class 4playoffs.

Gloucester's ADM for 3 classes is 1101, so their enrollment numbers appear to have dropped. Whatever the number, the VHSL has them in Class 4 Region A.

The bracket you compete during the playoffs is determined by the size of the school's enrollment. If you do not believe me then call the VHSL in Charlottesville. Above 1,500 is AAAAA. Gloucester has about 1,549. Gloucester is better off in the district they are in. They could not compete against the Peninsula District teams. However, in the AAAAA playoffs they may have to play against the likes of Maury and Warwick and Green Run. They will not fair well. Maury probably has the top team in the entire VHSL this year. OK, so it just may be enrollment in grades 10,11,12. 9th grade may not count.

The League does not use the ADM, per se. It uses the numbers from the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade levels only. 12th grade students are no longer used for the purposes of deciding a school’s class category. This change took affect with the advent of the current 4 year school cycle, which began with the 23/24 school year.

I think the move over time will benefit them as I believe more students will come out for football now that do not face teams like Phoebus and can more regularly win. The BRD this year is Lafayette and Poquoson.
Ps: this is old Lafayette guy, I needed to re- register. Couldn’t recover my password.!!
