I read a bit of "Mississippi Sports" mag in the gym this morning. First story I saw as a Godfrey article about the media's frequent and dramatic confusion of Mississippi State with Ole Miss. He pointed out when Ole Miss played OSU in the NIT, the USA Today had a full preview of the game. The USA Today's entire analysis was based on Mississippi State. USAT talked at depth about Stansbury's post season record, etc. It wasn't just a name slip. They thoroughly screwed up.

Godfrey did some research and found that no other two in-state schools (Virginia-Virginia Tech, Michigan-Michigan State and others) get confused like MSU and Ole Miss do. Godfrey went on to blame each of the schools for giving the media cause to stay confused. Both schools do a poor job of making a name for themselves. Fair enough.

Hey Godfrey - I got a scape goat for ya. How about "Ole Miss". No other in-state rivals you listed call themselves by some nickname. I mean if Texas made some habit of calling themselves "Big West" or some such it may be easy for outsiders to scratch their heads when they read about some post game matchup between "Big West" and Florida State. Let's see...Big West...was that Texas or Texas A&M, I forget.

I'll betcha if "Ole Miss" would have simply called themselves "Mississippi" all these years we wouldn't have all this confusion. You said yourself in the article that people around the nation know who the Rebels are. Manning legacy and all that. The school isn't the problem. Its the damn nickname.

It refers to the good Ole Mississippi.
The colonel and cotton picking on the plantation.
I think we are all past this now, but not the rebels, they want to cling to their guns and the ole rebel football religion.

You would think the would want to change their name to the New Mississippi or just the University of Mississippi.

I still find it amazing that Ole Miss calls Miss State the redneck school...
Now which school's fans fly a confederate flag?

But the last few years I've noticed it more with other sets of teams. A few years ago, Yahoo mixed up a set of logo's for Arizona State and Arizona. Just a few weeks ago I read an article that was mixed up Colorado and Colorado State.

As for the USA Today preview, that wasn't confusion as much as somebody simply not doing their job.

During the Florida-Michigan St. national title basketball game several years ago, the announcers referred to Florida as Florida St. and Michigan St. as Michigan within about 5 minutes time. That was when I realized that it's not just us, it's just that the vast majority of sports announcers are complete idiots.

in the eyes of most of the rest of the country. so either calling the other redneck is pretty funny. BUT... wiki is your friend.

The University got its nickname "Ole Miss" via a contest in 1897. That same year, the student yearbook was being published for the first time. As a way to find a name for the book, a contest was held to solicit suggestions from the student body. Elma Meek, a student at the time, submitted the winning entry of Ole Miss. Interestingly, the term "Ole Miss" is not derived from Mississippi, but was a term of respect used by slaves for the wife of a plantation owner.

so should we conclude Sir is a racist term?

Luckily, the vast majority of people think it's a term for the river, and perception is what counts. Meanings change over time.

I was wrong, but which is worse, Ole Mississippi or Ole Misses of the Plantation Owner.
Either term is out-dated and should no longer be used, the actual meaning is just as racist.

something being associated with the slave-owning era does not automatically make it racist. To be racist, it would need to really mean something derogatory about another race.

Bingo. People just don't do their homework. What does a person do to get one of those jobs anyway?

ESPN Interviewer: "Where do you see yourself in five years?"

Potential announcer: " I can envision myself wrapped in one of Pete Carrol's old shirts having coffee with my blow-up Buckeye, reminancing of the night before where I pleasured the world with my Big Ten/Pac Ten love fest during the SEC game!"

ESPN Invterviewer: "You're hired".

Talk to any African American and ask them if they think the Rebel flag is racist.
Also ask them if they think it is okay for Caucasian Americans to use terms associated with slavery in the USA.
I am pretty sure most will have a problem with both.</p>

I guess we should quit saying sir, and ma'am. And chores. And all sorts of other things/

Ask 1,000 black people and maybe 2 will know that Ole Miss is associated at all with slavery. If two even do.

blame the leaves for not executing their drop correctly from the tree and then say he needs five years before he can start to pick up the leaves because that's how bad the yard was in shape when he arrived on his golf cart.
