I though the "baller" one was stupid and I was originally turned off by this approach. I am warming up to it now.

I crack up every time I look at that. A damn handwritten "You're a baller!" is just funny as 17. Keep it up Geoff.

Collins set the bar too high with the first letter. It's all downhill from here.**

It was only a matter of time before the fans realized this is smart.

It's funny. 17 year old high school kids don't read 50 letters a day. This is the twitter generation - they have short attention spans.

Godfrey gets props. We obviously don't think much the guy, but this was a pretty good article on an interesting topic. I personally love the new approach from our coaching staff. If nothing else, we see how they think, and how they are trying any and everything to get their message out. You would have to have half a brain to believe that this is the only area where our coaches are trying to be innovative and push the envelope. My only problem with Collins' letter was the handwriting. The idea was great, and I am glad our coaching staff is finding new and innovative ways to reach recruits. I think thats what we all want.

It’s funny, and if it helps with recruits, or at least doesn’t HURT, then I’m ok with it. My only concern is whether recruits would consider the cheesiness of it to be a turn-off.

It's like hunting for Easter eggs in a video game or movie...

That's an amazing mutation of the 100-letters-in-a-day routine.

I think our coachin staff

did an excellent job of thinking out of the box here.

We've now given recruits a reason to open every letter we send. Whether it influences their interest in our program or not, it has brought us some publicity and even if it only sways 1 recruit to come here, then it worked.

My only complaint is that I wish they could've somehow started with the can of swag one, instead of the you're a baller one. Not sure how they could've done this, though.

I think it's a pretty sharp idea for the time being, but as Koening said yesterday (in reference to something else entirely) "coaching staffs, we're all thieves." Within six months someone will be sending watercolor paintings or something.

Collins was pretty funny about the whole thing, but I talked to him last yesterday and he was a little shy about his newfound fame. But here's the bigger point - mail from MSU is going to get opened more often now, and that's why they're doing it.

I've got another piece on MSU coming at some point this week, plus interviews with the offensive staff and Dan for a bigger feature I'm working on about the zone read and the spread option. Not sure when that will hit.

PS - Spent the better part of the day in the Seal Complex on campus. Outstanding facility.

PS2 - Had lunch with The General, who is now about 85% convinced that I'm not an Ole Miss double agent out to further the Rebel cabal's evil agenda. So that's nice.

PS3 - I think I met Backer. I almost asked Joe from the SID office to take a picture of me and him. #celebrity

I've always wondered just how many of hte 100+ letters in a day schools send to a recruit actually get opened and read. At some point you've got to think so much overkill would start having the opposite effect from that intended.

Great article - I love the tongue in cheek art talk.... "allowing his natural talent to evolve unencumbered by the gauche restrictions of conventional instruction", "Warholian Can of Swag", etc

Which reminds me, someone needs to photoshop "Swag" on the Warhol Campbell's soup cans.

Not at all, the way these first two went viral, now these kids will ignore all the UT, AU, UA, UF, etc,... letters looking for that one maroon State envelope in hopes that he will be the next target of Joe Lee Picasso so he can be a Twitter star too. They will even overlook the numerous envelopes from OM with scripture passages on the outside of them knowing they all contain a hand written letter from Freeze himself on a crisp $100 dollar bill, because as Freeze explained in all the other letter written in similar fashion, the athletic department keeps running out of stationary with letterhead so this was all they had laying around.

I hated the baller letter because the handwriting looked like a 6 year old wrote it. I don't mind the approach, it's a bit undignified and it's funny to think of a bunch of old men in a room trying to figure out what words the kids are using these days, but that's recruiting there was never any dignity
