Here's a pic. The left was from 95 and the right is more recent.

When and who decided to change out the base? Us or them? I realize it was to add more room for scores on the added plaques on the four sides of the wooden base, but who decided to add the base instead of another tier? I personally like the older style although the new one is fine too. When you do something like that do you have to consult with the other school? I've been curious about this for a while. Sorry if this info is well known, I was out of the country for a few years and didn't keep up with the small stuff.

Can anyone shed some light?

The wedding cake look was far more professional and kept the trophy from looking like some throwaway third-tier-bowl prize. Think Stanley Cup vs. Magnolia Bowl trophy.

That is exactly what I was getting at and why I was wondering whose decision it was to do it with the wood base.

....retroactively.

Each ring on the base of The Stanley Cup has scores & rosters (or maybe just the roster?) from the finals. As they run out of room, they retire the stop ring to the HOF, and add a new ring to the bottom.

The five inch wood platform was added when they ran out of room for scores after the 1992 game. The previous base was added in the early 1950s. The first score on the new base is from the 1993 game, but from the Tuberville Egg Bowl pic posted by jmbeck, the new base wasn't actually added until after the 1995 game. So I guess the scores were added retroactively.

Good reference: The Egg Bowl by William Barner

About his father finding the trophy in a broom closet battered and bent. His father paid to have it refinished. Y'all remember that?

Additionally, it is rumored that Ole Miss was too damned cheap to add another ring. They won the 1995 Battle of the Golden Egg, and it was between 1995 and 1996 that the wood base was added. I tend to agree with BMT though, in thinking both schools probably had input (thanks LT!).

Either way, I've thought many times that a ring should be added and that dumbass wood base thrown out. I've thought about looking into how much it would cost to do so, after the guy told the story about how his dad did it years ago.

Thinking about it is always as far as I've gotten.

Could NAFOOM and Sixpack come together for this worthwhile cause? Raise the money to eliminate that dumbass base?

Edit:

Supposedly, a friend is asking questions about it.

If NAFOOM can raise $1000 for the Alabama billboard, they can match it for this. I'm hoping we can also. I'd pledge $100 on the spot.
