It's not the type of sport where the best man tends to win most times.

Tiger Woods is dominant in golf, but he still rarely wins even half the time. Meanwhile, when was the last time Usain Bolt lost a race? Golf just doesn't fit to me as far as the Olympics is concerned.

The other reason I dont like golf as much as an Olympic because these guys from all over the world are already competing against each other all the time anyway. The beauty of the Olympics is that the competition exists between people that have no clue who each other are and have never competed against each other unless in another Olympics.

Do you really not think sprinters, swimmers, gymnasts, etc. from around the world don't compete against each other all the time?

It's just another tourney with only 60 players. I would have liked to seen two players per country play alternating shot in a single elimination tournament format.

Make it a match play tournament, both for individuals and for teams (four-ball or foursomes). Kinda like the Ryder Cup, but every country for itself.

If they make it a country team event rather than an individual event, then golf in the Olympics would have some value and some watchability.

However, if it's an individual tournament, just like most other PGA events, then it will probably not even be one of the Top 10 events of the year in the sport.

It's the same deal with tennis in the Olympics, the Olympic format is exactly like any other tournament they play every week during the year. That's why the Olympics are never more than the 5th most important tournament even in the Olympic years. Golf will be the same, it'll be the 5th most important tournament. If they used a team format for each sport, it would add something. But just playing a regular tournament is just like any other week.

4 round tourney is a turrible idea for Olympic-purposes. I can't wait to find out how the qualification process will be organized.

That's why it's going suck. There's a handful of other Olympic events like this. Road cycling comes to mind along with tennis. There are just bigger events out there that the players care more about.

How I'd do it.

Individual:
Pick the top 64 golfers in the world, maximum of 4 from a single country. Seed them in a single elimination match-play tournament. You need six rounds to decide medal winners. The first four rounds will be 9 holes. The two medal rounds will be 18 holes. Maybe adjust it to 3 and 3. With 4 and 2, the length would be the same as a standard tourney, but only 4 players would play the last 36 holes. Going full-course for all 6 rounds could be very interesting and turn this into one of the most taxing tournaments in the world, and narrowing down the field to 16 or 32 would make the field look like the typical final round of a major tournament.

Teams:
Like the individual tournament, but teams of two alternate shots. Maybe add foursomes.

Round 2 will be played at Reunion
Round 3 will be played at JCC
Round 4, the true test, will be played at Sonny Guy

If fewer than 3 golfers survive the final round, medals will be awarded to the golfer(s) who complete the most holes in the 4th round.

We're already in contact with PGA officials on a memorial for those golfers who lost their lives representing their country.

if we already "know" who the best is in any sport, then why do we even have the competitions in the first place?

you think the USA team was honestly better on paper than the 1980 russian hockey team?

you think the Russian basketball team was better than the USA's in 1988?

hell, if you watched any track before last summer's olympics you would not have thought Usain Bolt would have ran away with it like that. Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay were the 2 favorites.

I guess no sport belongs in the olympics as far as you're concerned.

Do you follow sports at all?

Do you think all these athletes just show up at the Olympics and compete for the first time all year in their sport? Seriously? Unreal.

Hell, how about basketball just as an easy example? I'm pretty sure the NBA players on foreign teams have played against the NBA players on the USA team.
