^ Umm, no. I never gave driving from Louisville one second of consideration, for that very reason.

I actually prefer TC to Kearney. Kearney might be my least favorite course in the state (and I really like links golf). It's just long, boring and has very little character. To me, weekend/hacker golf should be fun and Kearney just isn't a fun course.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. I think it has a LOT of variety, long and short par 3s, par 4s, and par 5s, and quite a bit of water. Even a short hitter like me can get close or maybe on no. 3 under the right conditions (although I have never done so). The one hole that I don't like is the first par 5 on the back (14??), which has a severely sloped green and a cyclops bunker in the face, and the approach shot is straight uphill. I can just never get the approach shot right.

I like Kearney because for a city course its always been in great shape. Great fairways to hit from, rough that isn't too bad to get out of, and the greens are usually very true. Doesn't hurt that you can spray the ball on most holes and escape. Obviously, there are a few you must be careful with but for the most part its open which i enjoy. I could see someone not being enamored with the layout but overall i enjoy playing there.

General question for you all.

Was talking to my club General Manager yesterday and he was asking me about ways to find more new members.

Pretty simple question. In your opinion, if you were looking to join a club what are the 3 most important things about a Club/Course that you look for if you were wanting to become a member?

Cost, condition and type of course and the people that will be playing that course. Need a Masters thread.

Same as you, only in different order

1 - Course (challenging and enjoyable to play over and over + course condition)
2 - General mood of club (good guys/ladies to play with, competitive, like to gamble, drink beer, and definitely not socially conscious, e.g., not Lou CC or Idle Hour)
3 - Price (doesn't have to be the cheapest deal in town, but has to be worth the money)

Not me, I just hope that viewers at home will keep emailing rules violations to the officials, so we can have major championships decided by fat guys watching TV at home, a day or two after the "infraction" occurred.

Get in the hole guy, mashed potato guy, and bababooey guy are annoying. The Johnny Miller call out is hilarious though.

Granted I am not a member at any CC but the top three things for me would be similar to what everyone has already said

1. Price- Specifically initiation fee.
2. Events and Activities
3. Course layout and condition

Off topic on the CC thing, I'm curious what is about to happen to Andover CC. Heard it is/was going to auction this week. I sure hope new owners don't expect to receive 5-10k initiation fees from new members, because with their history, there is no way I would give that up.

A monthly only fee is another thing.

So with me its:

1. Price
2. Quality of course
3. Price

I like the champions deal where you can play Champions and Keene Trace for one membership.

^ Can't be true. Cole said it was "thriving" 6 months ago.

Sad to see country clubs struggling across America. Maybe if some of you golf balls would actually join/support, it wouldn't be such an issue.

The main problem with Andover... the course sucks.

If I were in the market, the Keene/Champions membership is the best deal in town. 2 solid courses. Unlimited carts. I thought they were offering Widow's and U-Club but I'm not sure if that's the case any longer.

Back when I was looking I calculated it at having to play 60+ rounds to justify the cost. At the same course. Which I lived at least 20+ minutes from.I get the home base atmosphere but unless you grew up with that and are drawn to it, I don't get it. If you live on the course, totally understand. Otherwise I'd prefer moving around and playing other venues.

False.

For a golfer, you can't put a value on having a home club, practice facility, regular games, tournaments, men's league, new friendships/relationships, networking, Swimming Pool/family/social aspect...and many other things that come with membership to any club, golf or otherwise.

All of those things contribute to the "value" I spoke of above. Sure, that differs for each person, especially someone like yourself who can't even decide if he LIKES playing golf, I get it -- but it's far from as simple as calculating the cost of X # of rounds vs what you'd pay per-round elsewhere for the avid or in-love golfer.

Keene/Champions would be a great deal if they didn't add on the initiation fee this year. I believe last year they did not have it but starting this year they do. I think those two courses are near the top in Lexington though.

^ Definitely. Would be awesome if it was $50 per month w/ no initiation and no minimums & free carts & access to every other club in town! I'd join for a few weeks until it went under, for sure!

I am a member so am prejudiced, but it is a heckuva deal. I use Keene more than I thought, has excellent practice facility.

As for cost, hell, if you are just looking for a cheap deal, then TC and Lakeside are the places to go in Lexington. I want a good course to play, plus all the other added benefits BBdk cites above.

One other HUGE benefit to a private course is the ability to get on and play in 3 or 3 1/2 hours most anytime you want (outside of Sat/Sun mornings, obviously). When you get to a certain point in life, time is worth >>>>> than money.

Wouldn't mind paying membership dues at all out there. I think they were somehow even lower than Andover when i checked last year. Having to throw out 2500 or 5000 just to join after they had not been doing that is a bit of a turnoff IMO. Great practice areas at both courses which is worth a lot.

^ How old are you?

Be patient, even the Top Tier clubs are running Jr. or Initiation specials more often than not. If they've done it before, odds are they'll do it again when needed. If they cut it off, I'm guessing they got a great response out of it or reached their growth goal.

I heard Lex Country Club was making really good deals for the under 40 crowd, but it is pretty pricey once you hit 40, way more than I care to pay just to play golf, although Lex CC is a very nice track. Also heard the same thing a while back about Big Spring in Louisville

I get the benefits of having a membership and have thought about pulling the trigger (The Bull might be the best deal in the area, non-country club division) but I've never gotten more than a range membership because I prefer playing different courses.

You can, and they do, put a price tag on all that. If I lived on a course and once G is old enough we can drop him off and let him go for hours... absolutely. But not everyone thinks like that. One of my good buddies golfs every week, 2-3 days, well off, smart dude, and dropped his membership 10 years back and hasn't changed. He has all those benefits at whatever course he wants and does just that with 2-3 standing games and a great group. Just because you grew up with it doesn't mean it works for everyone.

I love golf, you know that. I follow PGA as much as just about anyone. I enjoy playing but as someone that didn't grow up playing if I want to get good enough that it's enjoyable it's going to require a few years of 3-4 times per week and consistent lessons. Just don't have that time right now.

TaylorMade M1/M2, Titleist AP1 AP2...anyone have any thoughts on these clubs? I've hit the AP1's and 2's and for me the AP1's were a better fit for me (more forgiving). However, I haven't hit the TM M1/M2's yet. Just wondering if anyone on here has and what your thoughts were.
