Many more articles about putting recruiting in perspective are needed.
There is a graduating HS Senior, Peter Jok, who I have played against randomly over the last few years in pickup games that was at one time the top basketball prospect for this class. A few years ago he was tagged with being #1 and I was able to see from a close distance how his recruiting unfolded. First, his brother plays Ivy League basketball at Penn. Second, he and his 3 siblings came over from Sudan as kids, but he has been here for a decade. With that said, it was interesting to see how he handled stardom and being an elite recruit. He had a serious knee injury a couple years ago, didnt play well as a result, and tanked in the rankings, eventually signing with Iowa.
While playing a few weeks ago, I asked him if he missed all the discussion by national recruiting services. He laughed, which I took as a firm no.
It was pretty cool to see a guy who had been atop the hill(even if it was early on) have a healthy perspective. He still has an arrogance and confidence to him, which makes sense considering he is a very solid major D1 prospect, but he hasnt let his ability to make a shot from anywhere in the half court cloud his judgement or outside the gym. Its an all too rare scenario.
