<h1 class="storyhdl">Spread the word: Defenses evolving to take away option</h1><font face="Arial, Helvetica" size="2">
What was once an offensive revolution is now slowly and assuredly falling prey to evolution. The formation that has largely been responsible for every major NCAA offensive record set this decade is on the clock. It's time is limited. The modern gurus of the spread -- Mike Leach, Urban Meyer, etc. -- might not admit it but defenses and their coordinators do not stand still.

</font> <font face="Arial, Helvetica" size="2">Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom: "The defenses will catch up to all that. In your defensive front, the only big guys are your two interior guys. Once you get past those two defensive tackles, it's all about speed and even they have to be able to run."

</font>

<font face="Arial, Helvetica" size="2">The spread will die because all offenses have their day: Remember the wishbone? It was de rigueur in the late 1960s and 1970s. Then d-coordinators started developing quicker, lighter defensive ends who could get to the perimeter quicker than the quarterback. That eliminated one of the three triple options, making it easier for defenses to break the bone.</font></p>

<font face="Arial, Helvetica" size="2">"The defenses will catch up to all that," Croom said of today's spread. "It's just like the wishbone. It's just like a passing wishbone. It all starts, like everything else, with the quarterback. The quarterback is most difficult person to account for."</font></p>

I liked what somebody else said here a while back - that the spread is going to work until defenses get smaller & speedier. Then offense is going to evolve back to smashmouth football to grind it out over the said smaller defenses.

I'm just skeptical that the spread has been "figured out" as much as this article makes it sound like. I still think defensive co. still have a whole lot work to do before they have it down...

Like anything that has been innovative in the sport, the pure form will fade away while the elements that worked will remain and become parts of more common offenses. I'm sure we will see shades of the spread this year with Elliot and Bonner involved, but it won't be whole-hog.

I'm sure the goal this year is to be successful on the outside when defenses are playing the run and therefore the cards are in our favor to make completions and move the ball. This will cause the defenses to defend more evenly, which will provide us opportunities in the power running game where we are strong and can dominate.

We don't run the spread because we have not had the speed and catching ability the spread requires. We don't even have the receivers and quarterbacks we need for the WCO. We do have talent for the power running game, so that is the game we will play, no matter what you call the offense.

I disagree. Players are getting bigger, faster, and stronger. That's why the spread was invented, because you had to start utilizing the whole field to take full advantage of the advantages you have over defenses.

If you think about it, ever since the single wing and early offenses, you haven't ever seen an offense make a comeback.

The spread may eventually die, but it'll die because it'll be replaced by something more innovative, not because teams revert back to the wishbone or smash mouth football.

Defenses haven't gotten any smaller. They've just gotten faster, and most defenses have the ability to match up with a spread and also match up against a traditional I formation offense. You have different personnel packages for that.

and smashmouth power running is one of them. The spread will eventually go the way of the bone....Power football will be around forever.

I don't think the spread will go the way of the bone. It'll evolve into more complex and more innovative schemes, but you'll still see offenses use elements of it.

I do agree that some elements of smash mouth will always exist, because it's the safest and easiest way to win a game if you can be physically stronger than the opposition. However, to be successful, even as a more gifted team, you still have to mix something else in in order to keep the defense off balance.

but Croom might not be the best person to opine about the spread, since he is seemingly the last one to figure it out.

We played West Virginia and faced the spread in 2006. Got our asses kicked.

Played them again and faced the spread in 2007. Got our asses kicked.

So what makes anyone think Croom is a legitimate source to quote on the eventual death of the spread? Against him, it's having a field day.

football is running, blocking, tackling and kicking. Formations come and go but you will still see formations and plays run in the modern era that were run in the Red Grange era.
You can do one or two things, run the ball or throw, I don't give a rat's *** what kind of formation you line up in. Good teams make their breaks and win and bad teams turn it over and lose.
Way too much trash talk about what some team runs. Just play the damn game.

p.s. I've never seen a team get points from a formation, they either throw it, run it or kick it. I'll be shock if a referee comes out and says "that formations is 6 points"!

The spread is like the talking in movies. We all know that talkies are just a fad and silent movies will reign again.

and Rich Rodriguez are the masters of the spread option, but to be fair to Croom, Auburn ran it with Kodi Burns when we didn't know they were going to do that and Ole Miss ran it some, and while both moved the ball, we still held both of them to 14 points. And also after the first quarter, where Ellis Johnson just flat out had a ****** gameplan, we played them pretty respectably.

At any rate, WV also has phenomenal players. I believe when Pittsburgh beat them, it was in part because Pat White went down with an injury.

NOT saying that Croom has spread figured out or anything, but we haven't done all that bad either.

its stuff like this that makes me just want to smack Crooms in the head and say "hellooooooooooo, McFlyyyyyyyyyy"....Crooms just cant go very long without saying something stupid...

1. The spread isnt going anywhere...Defenses are catching up to it? Nobody is slowing down TTech...Missouri and Kansas came out of nowhere to put a plethra of points on the board last year...WV was a top 5 team...The last 2 National-17'ing-Champions mix the spread with the I. I mean damn Crooms, this offense hasnt reached its summit, yet because you dont want to run it, you are gonna spew ******** that people are catching up to it? Moron

2. The wishbone has evolved to the double-slot and what Paul Johnson will run at Tech. Not the Spread....

3. I was listening to Tooberville talk about the Spread yesterday from his interview during media days...He had some great points about it:

makes defenses defend the whole field, you can run 60 times a game out of it, you can throw it 60 times a game out of it, high schools are transitioning to it and running it helps your recruiting, teams can no longer load the box on you with great athletes, easier for QB's to check out of...

Crooms is dead wrong in what he said. He is old school and likes the power running game, so that is what we are going to do at State by God. And thats fine, as long as we win. But i think he is about to find out todays game is about scoring...no more probation, no more excuses for him...

I thought there was some rule on 6pack that you couldn't make fun of people's and team's names. When someone comes on here and says, "ole piss" the pack gets into a frenzy and demands that heads role. Now coach here consistently uses "Crooms" and it's just ignored. I don't see why ole miss can't be ole piss if coach Croom can be Crooms. Just sayin'...

some people lack the intenstinal fortitude to do what's necessary. Blame yourselves.
