Going by memory here but I think it was 4th and 1 and we were moving the ball on them pretty well at the time. You put Relf under center and let him lunge forward for the first down to continue the drive, burn more clock, and get in better FG range should the drive stallagain. I knew were weren't going to make the FG from that distance.
He has only made 1 kick greater than 40 and that one was 43. Get 1 damn yard, kill the clock, and kick a shorter FG or scorea TD.I'm not2nd guessing, I was first guessing.
But the playcalling on the next possession, was worse.
Relf hadn't taken a snap straight from the center all game. While we do that when we're in goal line situations, I don't like doing that on a 4th down situation-- because it's a little too obvious and Ole Miss had been playing pretty good defense up the middle. Most of our rushing yards came from Perkins going to the outside as well as the long counter run by Relf.
At least we won the game and we're not second guessing the call after a loss. Question about the 4th quarter. What happened to L. Perkins and Chris Smith? Did they go to the concession stand or what?
Perkins had five carries for 48 yards that quarter and Smith one reception for 18 early in the fourth-- that was the only pass attempted by MSU in that quarter.
but I am amazed that we didn't take advantage of what C. Smith gives us in the passing game (in the 4th quarter). Despite the fumble earlier in the game, Smith is the best receiver we have. OM was selling out to the run in the 4th. Weshould have had one on one coverage all over the field. We could have had an easy pitch and catch to seal the game instead of sweating it out toward the end. But as they say...a win is a win.
