Well, hope "springs" eternal. (pun intended).

I think half the battle is having guys who want to play for ya. Coach Riley certainly seems to have that going for him.

The 1 thing that BO's defenses consistently struggled with was learning the system and being confused until about games 5 or 6. I'm cautiously optimistic that with the new coaches, the D will be sharp as nails from opening kickoff.

Not sure I'm convinced that all 4-3, almost all the time is better than using a nickel back almost all the time.

"In an interview with The World-Herald, Riley said Banker at times used
that 4-3 base for a whole game at Oregon State- no personnel packages."

OK, but last three years, the Beavers gave up 570, 568, and 565 yards to the Ducks. That's above their season average for Oregon each time.

Just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should.

To be fair, the Ducks put up those type of numbers on a lot of nickel and dimes as well.

One thing is for sure - Smilin' Mike and the Ginger are here to sabotage us. I'd pray for Nebraska, but it's clearly too late.

Yup.

Banker's defense will be light years ahead of Bo vs the run. No way they will be as stingy vs the pass but I would rather get beat by the pass than being run over time and time again.

WHAT?! Give Bo a break, not too many defenses in the Country can slow down the 1, 2, 3 punch of Mitch Leidner, Donnell Kirkwood, and Rodrick Williams, Jr. Leidner is a physical specimen. He must have SEC speed, that's the only way he could amass 1/4 of his total rushing yards for the year in just one game against a defensive guru.

Smilin' Mike and the Ginger would be a good band name.

I really see your point, however in the BiG I would rather be able to stop the run and get burned on some passes then to be able to defend the pass and be unable to stop the run. Bo couldn't stop the run because of the hold the line mentality of the DL and the think about it delays of the LB. Certainly the Beavers did almost nothing against the good offenses in the Pac12. Still I said during the season last year that I wish we would just gang tackle and run to the ball. That will have some downside this year on misdirection and fakes, but you can make an aweful lot of plays with hustle and without Suh, Bo's teams didn't have it. I also like simple. It will mean younger players can play sooner in the long run, which will aid depth and leverage good recruiting years. I am pumped overall. However, I am not all the hopeful about the offense so I am not expecting a good year this season. I do like the direction on defense though.

Bo also defended the pass well because he was in the worst throwing conference in college football, when he played a top passing team like Georgia he gave up 350-400 yards passing. It can't be underestimated the huge amount of inexperienced qbs we played the last couple years, including a huge number of backups, and we still got rolled by them. He should have been gone after 2012 season.

We have Godwin's Law when Hitler enters a conversation. We need a Law on this board whenever Bo gets brought up in a conversation that has nothing to do with him...because it happens all the time.

I can't believe a thread about the new defensive coordinator's defense would cause people to refer back to the one the previous guy ran last season. How inappropriate.

"Thus far, Banker has deployed Rose-Ivey as a strongside linebacker over the tight end while sophomore Marcus Newby walks out to cover a slot receiver. At 6-foot-1, 235 pounds, Newby weighs 45 pounds more than Evans did and 50 more than Byerson Cockrell, who played nickel last season and may again this season when Banker chooses to deploy one. Dedrick Young, a true freshman linebacker, is also working at Newby's walk-out spot."

NO.

I'm not so sure that was confusion or simply a mismatch by isolating a RB on our LB. I'm surprised more teams didn't run that RB drag route more often. Also, iirc, didn't we get shredded by a lot of cutback runs in that game?
