At what point in a man's life does he wake up and say 'Hey, I'm gunna staht talkin like an *** hole'. I've heard children talk like rednecks, but children don't talk like Colonel Sanders. An accent like Haley's is a forced and conscious decision to sound ridiculous.
It's too bad for Missippi. I'd love to see him up there, but I don't see anyone in the northeast giving him the benefit of the doubt with that thick an accent.
He sounds like that even when he's engaged in casual conversation. The shame of it is that people from other parts of the country won't get passed his accent to listen to what he is saying. He is very intelligent.

I was listening to NPR one day and someone mentioned that he would be a good candidate for president. I agree that he would be a good candidate, but people outside of the deep South would never vote for someone who talks the way he does. That's a shame.
They don't use y'all and over yonder much here... Was skiing Sat on the mountain and was telling my kids, 'y'all take the run over yonder" and people were clueless as to what I was telling them.....
With an accent like that, if it's genuine and not just a put on for appearances, it's amazing he got as far in life as he did. When you have native Mississippians cringing at your ridiculous Deep South accent, you need to shape up. He sounds like a parody of a Mississippi governor.
You sound like a moron if you have a really thick, country accent.
I've lived in the New Orleans area for 8 years now, and whenever I hear someone on the radio from Mississippi w/ a bad accent, I cringe. I think a lot of it has to do w/ a lack of education -- obviously, that's not the case w/ the gov'nah.
The accents around Starkville or Jackson aren't that bad, but Haley has to have one of the worst ones.
But, I swear people that talk like that make the conscious effort to begin talking like that when they are in their adult life. It's like it's a "dignified southern" accent or some BS. I think it sounds terrible, but obviously there's lots of Mississippians that like it because you hear lot of them talking that way. Especially if they are more affluent Mississippians.
There are countless teenagers and children in Mississippi that have thick accents. But, they are just traditional southern twang- good old fashioned redneck if you will. Haley's is much like Colonel Sanders, or Matlock. Young people never talk like that unless they are making fun of something. There has to be a point in these folks lives where they deliberately make the transition from a twang, to "dignified drawl". It has to be on purpose.
I like the guy and think he's intelligent and a pretty solid leader. It's just that type of accent has always been a pet peeve of mine.
