thing last night..

I heard that Texaco-Chevron was going to have a big promotional at the UK basketball game in a few nights. They are suppose to give out tshirts to the entire audience that will give the Hump a maroon and white checkerboard look.

I think a new sponsorship w/ Texaco is where this whole "Vroom Maroon" thing is coming from, but I could be wrong.

Sorry if it's Germans (not really)

The marketing firm honestly thought that was a good slogan.

Now if they were just withholding info there and your hypothesis was actually true, I'd probably be even more upset, because it would be selling out traditions for advertising. I know we need money, but the line needs to be drawn somewhere, doesn't it?

i could see this as a gimmick for one game in association with some company like texaco. but, the thought of us paying money to a firm to make this a permanent thing is insane. vroom maroon is the worst thing ever in that regard.

it's not good toshapeyour new "tradition" or "slogan" around a particular sponsor. what happens when you have a new sponsor?

i could see this as being a one-time thing, or even a seasonal marketing push. but if we want a slogan that stays with us and is as popular as "hook em horns" or "war eagle", then it shouldn't have anything to do with a sponsor.

I think you've hit on what we might be missing when it comes to this "Vroom Maroon" thing. Here is the excerpt from Byrne's column that leads me to believe this:
From
Sunday evening until yesterday, we had an advertising agency on our
campus proposing a campaign around which to build our season ticket
sales drive, marketing plan, and promotional activities for 2010-11.
In our conversations with this company in the months prior to their
visit, we really only gave them a few parameters around which to build
that campaign. We wanted them to push the envelope, to be edgy. We
wanted something fast-paced, hard-driving, something with energy. We
wanted them to build on the excitement of last year. As we have said
many times, we must be different at Mississippi State to compete in the
Southeastern Conference.
I hope this is the deal, anyway.

most of us probably would be. if it's going to be on billboards for a year like "spread the fun", then i can deal with it (though i still think they could've done better). if it's something that they hope will really catch on as our slogan, then it's terrible.

i think you're right, and the excerpt basically says it's just a one-year campaign.

comes to my mind as far as things that we've sold out on. Maybe not a tradition, but certainly a well liked logo.

we are still in the "need more money" mode? Sure, we would "like more money" but jeez, lets wait a year or so before we pull out the ragged clothes and tin cup. Lets see, 15 million x 15 years = 225 million increase in athletic budget dollars. Well, Dome Davis Wade, install golden shoe protectors at the Templeton troughs, send every alumni to Disney World, put 50 more spires on theHenry Hunter center, high speed underground rail to Sturgis(gameday parking), add 20 stories to Dorman Hall, WTF.

If this were true and Texaco was going to give a big sponsorship, you give the whatever the 17 they want.

MONEY talks. We need MONEY.

If we work out a deal w/ Texaco that involves themy giving us $1M or more a year, then they can have whatever slogan they want.
