Built a house last year and planted rye grass and zoysia. Rye grass came up Octoberish and now the zoysia is up looking good. But spotty. My question, if i plant more zoysia in the spot area(some are fairly large) can i still fertilize it. Or do i just fertilize the places where it’s growing already? In east Texas, Elysian Fields are. What say ye pack?

Fertilize after May 1.
Zoisia spreads slow, but ruthlessly.
Be patient.
Agree with this. I sodded zoysia 2 years ago and have been very happy with it. Pleasantly shocked with how quickly it has spread to areas I honestly figured were too shaded for grass. It’s a very nice pretty grass that is easy to maintain.

Doesn't answer your question but you won't regret the zoysia once it takes hold. I have seeded a few patches in my yard after dirt work, etc. It's taken a few years but it's taking hold. My dad put a few sprigs in two areas of his yard probably 30 years ago. Keep in mind it's 3 acres separated by concrete- the whole thing isn't zoysia but large swaths are and it's obvious where it's at when you scan the yard. Stays low. Not a weed or Bahia anywhere in sight. Had a friend in a subdivision who built new and used zoysia sod. He only mows his lawn about once a month in summer and only because he feels like he should.
