Both coaches suck. Not sure why we still have fans trying to type on here while fellating a Cal cardboard cutout to this very day.

And yet, some programs did just fine during lockdown. Quit making excuses for a coach who obviously didn't have the fire any more and wanted to move on. I think anyone who watched Cal's teams post 2019-2020 and wanted him to move on is thinking very clearly.
I would pick John Calipari to pick players for a basketball team 100 times before I pick Mark Pope. I respect Cal and what he did for this program.
So all teams lost in Covid? Someone had to win all those games. What a lame excuse. Apparently everyone had a losing record? Some teams showed out. UK wasn’t hit any harder than any other team was so stop crying about Covid.
Hit me up when Pope can’t win a NIT tournament. with 5 star talent then we can debate.
Edit: I think there is enough talent in this team not to get embarrassed everytime they play someone with a pulse. This team doesn’t doesn’t suck from lack of talent they suck because they are a broken team.
We didnt win the NIT because the second we missed the tournament, we checked out. Thats a cop out to hold against Cal. Plenty of teams miss the tournament, get the NIT bid, and give almost no effort. Its a meaningless tournament, and 5-star/elite players (who are headed to the NBA) certainly dont care. We all should know that. I could care less what we did in the NIT. It holds no weight for me. Its just used to push an agenda.
This team should be better, sure. How much? I dont think a whole lot. Its a comprised of either 5th options on good teams (Aberdeen), or top options on bad ones (Lowe). Its a pretty Meh roster, especially with injuries.
If I was Pope I would reject an NIT bid. Thats not UK basketball

Not as much as I loved the NCAA Championship, the NCAA Finalist, 2 Final Fours, and 4 Elite Eights finishes.
I'd honestly be here then stuck with Cal. This bad 6 year stretch in UK history.....Cal was here for 4 of the 6 years

You how ever want back the Calipari that won 9 games in a season, that lost to Duke by 34 points, that loses in the 1st round of the tourney, one of those 1st round losses was to a 14 seed. That is what you want back, and I can't understand why you want that?

Cal is better than Pope period. Should Cal have left, maybe or probably but shouldn’t have ran him off until a top tier replacement was in the bag.
Cal got embarrassed plenty of times at UK. Plus he had 10 times the talent that Pope has. So that makes it even worse.

Pope made the Sweet 16 last year, with a roster he assembled in a month.
Cal hadn't won a tournament game in about 5 years.
A lot of Cal's teams at UK greatly underperformed, and never came close to the preseason hype or rankings. NIL put a dent into Cal's recruiting prowess.
There is a reason everyone wanted him gone. That's because most of the "star" players he recruited, failed to meet expectations. Plus we were losing to everyone.

Both sides were tired of each other and ready to move on. Cal became standoffish with fans and local media the 9-16 year because he apparently thought we would take it well.
Following that up with St. Peter’s/mediocre 2023/Oakland sealed his fate. Fans got madder and madder and Cal got more and more standoffish with every loss.
The divorce had to happen.
Get your licks in while you can. Anyone being honest about things would see that Cal was finished here. He made a change and got a fresh start somewhere else. The version of Cal you see today is not where he was the last 4 or 5 years coaching here.
Because you are picking and choosing the bad games of that period. Would you like to be a #2 or #3 seed in NCAA tournament?
You are not going to go to the Final Four every year.
He did have some bumps over a 15 year period, but he also had plenty of GREAT times at UK too. Pope has only been here a year and 8 games and he is pumping out more embarrassing moments than he is good moments. Pope will never have the talent Cal had. So it is going to get much worse.
He had one bad year in those 5 years you talk of.
How many tourney games did we win in those last 5 years? How many second weekends? How many SEC finals?

It really is stunning how many people view everything as a mutually exclusive decision. I’m squarely in the camp that questions if Pope can do it but Calipari wasn’t going to at UK anymore. He flirted with UCLA earlier and OSU his last year. Tell me the last time Cal brought back 4 guys that play the # of minutes he has at Arkansas.
If Cal wanted to be here, he would be. He chose to be difficult with boosters, fans and the administration.
