Gray Area Calls Allow Refs to control a game

Opinion calls aka Gray Area Calls are ruining sports. It allows officials to control/rig games.

NFL - Holding, Pass Interference, ect
Basketball - block, charge, foul, ect
Baseball - balls & strikes

I could go on for days but...

Prove me wrong!

College basketball is being ruined with the 50/50 calls. 1 ref can take a game over. Handcheck can be called a foul or travel. Over the back foul or jump ball. Charge/block calls are pretty much a refs discretion. A couple of calls can cause foul trouble and take a team out of its defense. Foul trouble can limit a team offensively by taking players who teams have built their offenses around off the floor.

Any game where over 40+ fouls total are called should be reviewed by a league office staff unaffiliated with referees, and they should be offering feedback on how to lower foul calls. Ref teams who average a high amount of calls per game in comparison should be considered to be performing poorly. The refs are only there as a necessity, they should make every effort to be anonymous and inconspicuous.

I've said before a good way to eliminate the most egregious charge calls is to change the sign the ref makes to call it. They love that power move to make that charge call. Change the call motion and have them throw up their hands, wave them around, and do a 360.... and most of them will stop,

The gray area is what defines a good official from a bad one. Calls not in the gray area are easy and could be made accurately by 95 percent of people on this board. But these are also the calls that show who are the most biased officials, because it’s easy to see how they keep making the wrong calls over and over. Most logical fans will forgive gray area calls we may disagree with, but not obvious bias officiating. That’s where the problem is.

Just don’t blow the whistle unless it’s clearly a foul. Just because somebody barely gets touched does not mean you have to make a call. It’s pretty simple really

Some of those call were not even in the Gray area. The moving screen call on EJ was a joke.

I've thought for a number of years balls and strikes could be done easily & instantaneously via video (from multiple angles) & computer.

Basketball is one that should be easily corrected via replay. But that's shown to not be the case so far. Maybe some tweaks can help.

Football to me is the easiest to affect. The "game of inches". They will measure a first down to the centimeter, yet where the ball is marked is simply a referee eye-balling it, and then walking 20 yards and trying to eye-ball the same distance to/from the closest hash mark.

I still remember the OSU game. Wesson moved on every screen he set and nothing. Nick got one maybe two called that game for way less.

I believe Montgomery has gotten more touch fouls than anybody I have seen a in a long time. His last foul was totally ridiculous and that's when Cal went off, 40 and 50 something fouls a game lately and going to the monitor every other time down court has got to stop. The games are way to long and almost to the point of not worth watching.

What bothers me the most is when one ref (the closest to the play) doesn't call something and the ref 50 feet away calls something.
I mean come on you attention *****.

A couple touch fouls on a guy can change the game but refs can be even less obvious. In basketball Id say it’s the lack of calls or timing of a call. It’s a game of runs. How many times have we pulled away, just on the edge of blowing it out when a few whistles completely change the momentum. And then how many times does the team losing start making a run and is allowed to get away with murder?

Great idea. Probably actually would work. They really love that block call too though, and it really looks weird the way they get into it. Maybe they just like the attention.

They absolutely are. If it's close to the spread, you can tell exactly which way they want it to go. Most times you can practically guess the spread based on calls towards the end.

The only question is are they doing it on their own? or is it part of a much larger organized crime type operation? My guess is the latter
