Wasn't the womens temperance movement and all the Prohibition/end of OH- started in Evanston?? I'd be very surprised if they ever go thru with selling alcohol at NU football/bball games. Things are much more conservative even from when I was a student/class of 91'. Back then we'd suckle from the kegs all game in the parking lot. Sometimes, we'd sneak them into the Dyche stadium. Now, the frats are dry. The parking lots are all rich donors that don't really drink that much from the looks I got at the most recent game I attended. Selling alcohol at games risks a lot of lawsuits when things go wrong in the stadium and after the games when people drive home. I highly doubt NU will go ahead and start selling in the stadiums. Although, I might be surprised??

Well, the international headquarters of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was about 100 feet behind my dorm (still is, I think). To get a pitcher of beer at “The Big Pickle,” you had to order a pizza. Of course, we’d order about “eight” pitchers of beer to go with that pizza.

I’m surprised frats can’t/don’t get kegs for parties anymore. What’s behind that? Did NU outlaw it?

Theta Delt special at the Big Pickle was a hot dog and a pitcher of beer. Most of the cooks were brothers, and the waitresses were little sisters. Small cheese pizza meant large with everything.

crack down on frats and alcohol in early 90s - kid from some school down south was visiting one of their frats on north campus. He was doing push-ups on Sheridan Road and got hit by a car

From what I hear/understand, the greek system/frats are dry now because of members/people at parties have died from either alcohol poisoning or drunk driving accidents- stuff like that. They don't throw booze parties anymore at NU. The greek system is set up now for friendships and charity stuff. Things changed in the early 90's.

What I've never understood in this topic is how NU is allowed to sell beers OUTSIDE of Ryan Field in the N Zone (or whatever they call it) but beers inside RF or WR are a no-no as far as Evanston is concerned.

Not sure where you were tailgating, and it's awful hard to get too seriously wrecked before an 11 AM game, but there is plenty of alcohol flowing in the parking lots before every football game.

Frats still had keg parties while I was there through 1998.

They have been selling beer at Minnesota FB games for quite a few years. Also think they sell it at Purdue, Illinois and maybe MSU? Haven't heard of any problems. Heck they even served booze at UNLV!

Of course, the license proposal is getting the Evanston treatment.

I know the relationship between NU and the town is horrible. And I'd be the first to place most of the blame on NU. But Evanston and its citizens are not innocent of tainting those waters.

The neighbors are idiots who regularly do this as if the stadium was built three years ago. And yes, I was one of their Central St. neighbors and a homeowner there for seven years - first one block from the stadium, then 4 blocks from the stadium.

I love the woman who exaggerates there are 50 events every year. There are 15 events AT BEST that are inconvenient for the neighborhood.

My favorite is the person who whined at a meeting earlier in the year, "Northwestern has not proven themselves to be respectful to the neighbors like they used to be years ago — they had students come by after football games and clean up.”

BTW, if you didn't see it, now they're b**ching about the neighborhood parking also. Obviously, they're not very sharp if this is a sudden issue.

https://dailynorthwestern.com/2020/...ose-new-solution-to-welsh-ryan-parking-issue/

Evanston is an interesting place. How it keeps a reputation for being open minded, I'll never know.

This is such an overrated worry. The hooligans who would hypothetically abuse it - I definitely was one! - aren’t going to be paying the prices necessary to get drunk IN the arena off THE ARENA’S beer, lol. They’re going to drink before the game, and that’s already happening.

Not selling alcohol is just mostly penalizing relatively responsible adults have the disposal income and want a damn beer!

Wasn't beer offered - get one free - on Walker Terrace during fball until very recently?

If it was done there, I dont see why the school would not do it inside the arena too during basketball/

I know this is true. You make a good point. But NU games/atmosphere is much different from the programs that you mention. Keep in mind as well, that NU administrators are much more conservative than the ones at the schools you mentioned (in my opinion). NU games are more like going to ravinia for a mantilow concert than a smashmouth football game like at the schools you iterated. And yes, I go often to ravinia- and they do sell booze there. I realize this. But do they sell booze at Stanford games (the only analogy I could make to a NU game)? If they do, then you might have a point and NU very well might offering beer/wine at games. I just doubt this will happen. I had season tickets for over 20 years. I witnessed once several NU fans complain about a zealous fan who simply cheered really loud and occasionally honked on a bazzoo. He was just being a normal fan. They said he was too loud and had security nearly escort him out of the stadium. I was flabbergasted. This is the atmosphere you get at home NU games. I personally do hope NU sells beer/wine to fans at games. Maybe this will loosen them up and actually have typical relative fun at games.

I've learned the hard way that the best way for me to watch Northwestern sports is stone-cold sober. But if you're willing to trek to Welsh-Ryan on a Wedneday night to watch our 14th-place men's basketball team, you deserve the right to pay $10 for a beer.

Thinking that was before or after the game. Also maybe because they weren't charging for it, they didn't need a license.

Yeah. I was very confused by this comment too. Nearly every tailgate I see in the West Lot has at least a moderate amount of alcohol consumption ongoing.

Might be part of his ongoing crusade against parking lot donations.

Yeah. I would consider myself to be the opposite of a teetotaler, but I have no problem with it being dry in the stadium. I like the concept of having some beers before the game, and then using the 3+ hours inside to nervously drink water to balance it out and then be mostly sober after the game (depends a bit on game start, but that's the general concept). Then you are well-positioned for the rest of the day.

They sell beer at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Coliseum, home of Wake Forest hoops. Selection is limited to Coors Light or a beer made by a very good local brewery, Foothills. I find that buying one beer before tip-off and a second at halftime is just the ticket to making the Deacs tolerable to watch.

Right just as long as it's not Coors Light.

This is a discussion about beer. What's Coors Light got to do with it?

If we're 're talking about watching the 14th-place team this season, I'm of the mind that scotch is required. That's not to say I'm prepared to pay arena scotch prices...

The best beer in the world, for many purposes - tailgates, the golf course, afternoon consumption, etc. Now I like a good pale ale or IPA too, but CL’s serve a purpose that those cannot fully match.

And that purpose is , cleaning tables and golf clubs?
