Got to fooling around on youtube tonight and started thinking about all of the great, recognizable sports traditions, both college and pro. I'm talking about things that any real sports enthusiast would recognize. Two of my favorites are from CBS. Probably my favorite is their closing out every NCAA Tournament with the "One Shining Moment" montage. Also, their intro to the Masters with the smooth voice of Jim Nance announcing "A tradition like no other". For us race fans, although the event has lost some of its appeal over the last few years, the playing and singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana" prior the the start of the Indy 500. Give me some more good ones.

you know, the ncaa basketball tournament, masters and indy 500 are all great traditional events. add to that the singing of "my old kentucky home" before the kentucky derby, i also have always loved nfl films (ramblin man from gramblin is a favorite), and also dotting the i at ohio state.

but the dotting of the "i" is pretty cool. and all of texas a&m's traditions are awesome. i.e. they have a boarder collie that walks around campus, and if the dog walks into a class room and barks, no if and's or buts about it the class is canceled.

I also think it's cool that band learns the opposing team's fight song and plays it in front of the opposing section prior to the game.

the constant playing off F-ing Rocky Top. I like the song and think it is a top 10 fight song but they play it to sickening levels. Additionally, none of the fans know the words. It is just hum, hum, hum, whoo Rocky Top.

and they're all pretty cool, except for that nut-grabbing one.

(surely, these idiots aren't ACTUALLY doing what they're supposed to be doing.)

Also teaching your children to cuss and sound gay at the same time with the Hotty Toddy cheer.

than OU at this. I remember a couple of years ago, I think OU was playing West Virginia in some bowl and I honestly believe that Boomer Sooner was played the entire game without a single break except for half time. I ended up just changing the channel. It was so terrible.

It's a pretty longstanding tradition that is, at least in college football, completely unique to MSU. The reason it probably doesn't garner more attention nationally is because of the SEC imposed ban and the general suckitude of our football program throughout the years.

Scared the hell out of me at the time, cause I didn't know it was coming, but I was one of the poor saps STILL in the State section @ Florida back in '01 (I think)... It was either start of the second half or possibly even the start of the 3rd quarter and the whole f'n stadium stood up, locked arms, and started some chant while swaying side to side. That was our signal to leave, but it was quite impressive to see the entire stadium working together as one.

...just for shtis and giggles, does anybody know what in the world is it that they are doing?

They sing "We Are the Boys from Old Florida" at the end of the 3rd quarter of every home game.

thanks... probably should not be on the list of Great Sports Traditions, but it sure beats the hell out of "Moron... Wyatt..." What else we got?

And what's the rather involved little routine that BYU does during games? i know they did it everytime they scored, maybe more...

It was my first time to sit up in the new upperdeck when BYU rolled into town that year undefeated (must've been 02?)
We gave them a pretty good game, but everytime they did something good, they had some cheesy little chant they did. I couldn't understand what they were saying but as I was in the upperdeck, I was surrounded by them. They mocked my cowbell with their stadium cups of ice, so I would return the favor and mocked their little skit when we got a sack or whatever minute thing we might have done to our benefit. It was all in fun, but for the life of me, don't have a clue what they were saying.

but the f'n croom error killed that. Damn ammo was dudded by the time that Fer figured out how to run a f'n play.

stories regarding the origin of "Hotty Toddy," but I've never heard the Marine one. I think the three most popular involve Faulkner's alleged drunken rant atop Ventress, a play on the 19th century phrase "Hoity Toity," and the drink.
