Greatest Film Trilogy Ever??

This is an interesting subject because many people will say different things. Some will say 'The Godfather' trilogy (although I wouldn't because I absolutely hated part III and would never soil the good name of the first two by associating them with it). Some may also say the Dollars trilogy, but I can't call it a trilogy if the films don't have recurring characters and the stories don't play into one another.

For me, I'm going to have to go with the original 'Star Wars' trilogy. Each film played off the previous perfectly and I still find time to watch them each at least once a year.

I'd like to also throw out an oft unmentioned trilogy which I, as a science fiction fan, have enjoyed immensely over the years and that is the Star Trek trilogy going from Part II 'The Wrath of Khan', through part III 'The Search For Spock', and finally part IV 'The Voyage Home'. They are each great films in their own right, but all three together play out one whole story from beginning to end that is pretty damn entertaining and represents, in my opinion, the best of what the Trek films (now 12 of them) have to offer.

What qualifies as greatest? No movie trilogy has had a greater impact (sales, influence, longevity) than the original Star Wars trilogy and it is not even close.

LOTR and Godfather are the only other contenders IMO.

I thought Return of the Jedi was a weak entry into the Star Wars trilogy. The freaking Ewoks were nearly as bad as Jar Jar Binks.

Lord of the Rings was solid for all three as was the Dark Knight. I also love the Dollars trilogy (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, Bad and the Ugly).

Return of the Jedi is a bad *** movie. Just not as bad *** as the first 2.

Lord of the Rings and Star Wars are close at the top.

Bourne is up there because all 3 are really good movies and have the unique distinction of each film being better than the preceding.

The Godfather would definitely be number one if Coppola had made a better effort on the last one.

I'll go with the Three colors trilogy - Kieslowski

Fun trilogies:
Mighty ducks
Back to the future
Nolan's batman
Lord of the rings
Star Wars OT
The matrix
Indiana Jones (fourth one doesn't count)
Toy Story

A good trilogy that I'm not a huge fan of is Linklater's Before trilogy.

I really like Back To The Future. Just all together awesome throwback fun movies, plus I can show them to my kidsno problem. Second choice would be the Nolan Batman movies. Begins and Dark Knight were awesome. The story line for Rises could have taken another year to marinate, but it was a decent movie as well.

This is only a contest between LotR and Star Wars.

The debate is that LotR is consistently better throughout all three movies, but Star Wars' peaks are the greatest. Take your pick, I suppose.

Dark horses are the Cornetto trilogy and Indiana Jones.

They are definitely the most popular, but I think it's fair to say many people like other trilogies better. Those would probably be in most everyone's top 5 though, which would not be the same for other trilogies.

Tough call. It be
No Contest if GF3 had been anywhere near as good as GF1 & 2. Then you have LOTR which I thought of 1st when I saw this thread but as it has been pointed out this was based one 1 book that was broken up into 3 movies so it easier to produce a Great Triology. Then you have Star Wars which when you consider the overall impact this Triology had and that each movie was created separately to complete the story I guess if I had to pick I would go with Star Wars.

The first two Godfather films are perfect. Both films won Best Picture, if I'm not mistaken. However, part 3 was horrendous, which takes away from it.

The first two were dramatic tragedy. (1. Macbeth 2. The Orestia) Three was an opera without music. Very stylized. Or else you could say it's an unfunny version of Cookie (Peter Falk and Emily Lloyd.) It works both ways.

If we are talking three quality flicks, then those batman movies are the best.

If we are talking best it has to be The Godfather. The first two were so good the third didn't need to exist at all but those first two carry it.

Back to the future is also a quality pick IMO.

Almost everyone's sleeping on Toy Story. Most trilogies have a weaker third act than the previous two. Toy Story is awesome. Toy Story 2 was...meh. Toy Story 3, however was absolutely amazing, and showcased Pixar at the top of their game.

Yes Toy Story was great, for children. Now did I mind watching each one over 200 times, no, but come on now we are talking about best ever trilogies.

Best ever trilogies for dudes? Because that's what all these lists look like. I think Toy Story has a place in the discussion. In terms of animated features it's one of the very best and really legitimized the genre. Some of the writing from Pixar is second to none.

Here's one few have watched

Ip Man

It's a foreign film with subtitles on currently on Netflix,
Note of interest: Based on a true story and he was Bruce Lee's original Kung Fu teacher.

Not greatest all time trilogy by no means, but worth watching.
