He was not a five star recruit. He was not flashy. But the guy got it done. People forget he was a redshirt freshman in 98. He made some spectacular plays that year and beyond.

My favorite is John Bond. He was the best option QB ever. Not the best overall.
Don Smith greatest athlete at QB ever.

This reminds though......Bond went through this and Madkin did too.......but here is the career cycle of a MSU QB in the mind of State fans..........

Freshman: greatest ever
Sophmore : ok maybe this year he becomes greatest ever
Junior: who is the backup?
Senior: cussed and booed.

What I remember about Sleepy is he only played in 91 and part of 92. That is all I recall him playing. So, hard to put him over the likes of Bond, Smith, and Madkin who played 4 years. Sleepy was good though. I remember the game in Austin, TX in particular. He made some runs and throws that game.

and it really wasnt even close

Madkin played with the greatest defenses in school history
Some of the wins Madkin gets credit for belong to Wyatt for coming in to save his *** because he couldnt get the job done

When Madkin was a Senior, and all that defensive talent was gone, what happened? He lost his job to Fant because Fant was better. That's all that needs to be said right there.

were 3 of those 6 wins.

The smoke and mirrors part is right though. We won 6 games with one offensive threat and very little defense. I went to the last win, Tulane, and knew we were in trouble.

If you'll remember, the fans were hollering for Fant, having seen his pretty passes. JWS resisted but finally gave in. Fant threw some incredible interceptions in the games that followed. The next season, Fant "held out" and bought new tires. He really helped our team a lot. He got us to where we were going.

He lost his Job because of fan/booster pressure to put the white guy in...

edited to add:

Each time I see the Burger King "Small Hands" commercial, I think of Fant. He dropped a crapload of snaps because of that.

Madkin lost his starting position b/c he wasn't good and people thought Fant couldn't be any worse, which wasnot false as far as Ican remember. Andeven if Fant sucked, why not play the young sucky qb.I'd still like to see how Fantwould have done with a decent team, but I remember how Madkin did with a good team, and he didnot do well. The best you could say is that he wasn't so ****** that the D (with a smidgen of help from Wyatt if necessary) couldn't win games when he played.

First with all due respect to Fant. Because the guy was good. Also, to be honest, there is probably isn't much difference in their ability to throw the ball, read a defense, and lead the offense. However, one QB made plays that the other never did. You can say, well one did not have the talent around that the other one did. Whatever.......it can be argued Madkin puts up better numbers if UT or Bama took him......but fact still remains. Both were at the same school, under the same coach. Madkin made some outstanding plays in that 98 Arkansas game. With the game on the line, Madkin converts 3rd and long, 4th and long. 98 as a RFreshman, plays a very respectable game in SECCG. 1999 Egg Bowl, greatest comeback in school history, Madkin is the QB. 2000 Snow bowl.......what a great decision to run for the win in OT. Peach Bowl MVP. Only State QB in recent memory to play on the professional level.

Yeah, not even close come to think of it.

ever again...you actually post fairly well sometimes, don't regress on me

Craig Stump recruited our area of the state and I got to know him pretty well while he was at State. I asked him about it and he looked me dead in the face and said that Fant had been a better QB than Madkin for a year but Jackie refused to make the switch out of loyalty for the most part. In 2000, he was worried about Fant's experience, but in 2001 he held on as long as he did simply because of loyalty. He didnt want to replace a Senior. But it finally became so clear that Fant was their best option that even some of the players went to Jackie about it. Thats when both started playing, and then of course Madkin ended the year injured and Fant had it on his own.

Fant was easily the best QB and it wasnt even close. If you put Fant on those 98-2000 teams, we win the West all 3 years

but even with that, if you listed the players that played with Wayne and the ones that played with Fant- you would see a difference.

Madkin had to be taken out of games numerous times because he simply couldnt get the job done. Matt Wyatt did. Matt Wyatt was able to do things at QB that Madkin couldnt- that should tell you alot right there.

Then Madkin, as a Senior, when he should be at his best, loses the the job to Fant. And the offense got alot better once Fant took over. Fant's completion percentage that year to Madkin's was 55%- 50%....I mean, head to head Fant was superior.

Madkin was awful in the SECCG- did we even score an offensive TD? Bean had a pick he ran back- can't remember if he scored or just set us up inside the 10 and KP ran a punt back. How is that respectable? He missed open WR after open WR

1999 Egg Bowl? He was awful for 3 quarters and then hits the most wide open TE I've ever seen. How bout Fant's 2001 Egg Bowl vs Eli? That was what a QB is supposed to look like.

Amazing how people have forgotten how good we were on defense and how bad we were on offense with Madkin at QB.

and thus, the best. I'll never forget my first MSU football game that I attended- the 1991 Egg Bowl. He tore Ole Miss a new one that day.

Most of our "great" modern QB's have been option guys- Rockey Felker was the SEC MVP as a senior. I don't think very many, if any MSU players have done that. Bond was very good in 1980 and 81.

I think Kevin Fant is a tragic hero of sorts for MSU. He was rumored to be better than Eli at times. He definately was for one night. That was the best performance I have ever seen by a MSU QB vs a SEC opponent. I felt totally comfortable with Fant the entire game.

What was sad was Fant was a talented player that happened to play on some of MSU's worst teams. He had no o-line. His WR's were bad and would drop balls left and right. He had a morbidly obese Dontae Walker running the ball for him. Joe Lee Dunn decided to stop trying, and then Ron Cooper. John Micheal Miss a Mile. Xenareb. You name it- and lest we forget the nonsensical QB sneak against Troy that took away any mobility that Fant had and essentially made him a takling dummy.

I wasn't mad when he quit for a brief time because whoever we had a QB was going to take a pounding. I respect that he went out there and took those licks.

Twice in the '99 season Madkin was removed and Wyatt pulled off the comeback. Any other replacements with Wyatt that season either resulted in a loss or Wayne coming back in to lead the team to victory.
