Hearing about the run that Appomattox has made in the 2A realm and how many are comparing them to some of greats in 2A has me thinking, who's the best team you've seen? Classification doesn't matter. My list is as follows (I know, I said team, but I believe that all of these teams have merit).

1). 1996 or 1997 Hampton: I don't think anyone could have contained Curry. Scored 819 in '96, and blew out the competition in '96 and '97 in the title game. I don't think anyone is close to these two teams for best all time.

2). 2014 Ocean Lakes: Just the amount of Division 1 players that played on that team alone gets them onto my list. Lewis, Taylor, Crosby, Hubbard, Simmons, Alleyne, Griffin, Womack, and Spence (x2) were ridiculous on defense. Definitely a fun team to watch.

3). 1994 Powell Valley: Although I've seen them on film, I give them a nod. I don't think they could match the teams I have listed before because the amount of talented players they have compared to the others isn't close, but that team did some damage!

I know people are going to disagree, but it's fun hearing who everyone has. I know you will disagree with my list, but make your own and have fun!!

Best player I've ever seen: Vic Hall. No question.

The QB and Top WR from that Ocean Lakes team both go to Newport News Apprentice School with 2015 Appo QB Matt Page. The QB is Brenden O'Neil. He is like 5'8" but he can sling the rock. He went down with a ruptured ankle late in season. He had to get a major operation on it. Matt Page was starter last 3 games. I go see them as well, gotta support my boys in college too.
I keep up with all my Appomattox boys in college. Buster Henderson at UVA wise at Safety, 2013 QB Kendall Blankenship is a safety at Hampden sydney, 2015 OL Matthan Drew at Ferrum, WR Deshawn Thomas went to Bluefield but later transferred to Radford (He dont play no more), Safety Devin Dews and TE Marquise Morgan both are redshirted at U of Charleston.

That's because the 2 Vic Hall lead teams are listed at 3A......they were incredible teams on both sides of the ball....one team scored 725 and the other 694 with Vic hardly ever seeing more than the 1st drive of the second half. One of those teams only gave 109 points with the 2nd string defense playing the majority of the 2nd half. Vic Hall best high school player I ever watched....can't imagine his number if had played more than a half of his games. Gretna should have been playing single A but dominated AA those years.

Allen Iverson best high school football player I've ever seen.
QB from Glass was good that year as everyone thought he was the real deal until they ran across Iverson. (if my memory serves me correctly). Hall was good and maybe the best we have seen in 2A. Heck I'm sp[itting hairs now, they all were unstoppable

Danny Davis of Rustburg dominated both sides of the ball. Running back who could out run or run over people. On defense he was sideline to sideline linebacker that hit like a truck. Kicked off and seemed like he'd make every tackle afterwards. We tried putting two guys on him and it didn't work.

Hall was a superior talent, but in my opinion Davis was special to watch.

Best HS player..I remember a dude named Micah "Bootsie" Moon from Altavista who was one Bada$$ player...especially on defense.

When the Haley's came through at WC, I always thought Lawrence was better than Charles..but that shows you what talent and hard work does versus talent and no work .

Also the Barber Boys were special and Anthony Poindexter was just a Beast. My local favorite is Kevin Ferguson a great Appo QB who went to UVA.

Both of the Brown's from future EC Glass were great but who knew..NFL'ers. Same for Central VA NFL'ers Keith Hamilton, Paris Lennon, Rashad Jennings, Jake Grove, Brad Butler or Chris Cook.

Who will be next?

Best player I've seen is Vic Hall. He had NFL speed playing against high school kids. Iverson had some sweet moves too. Best team though has to be Hampton mid-90s. They were dominant in all phases. The games against Bethel were epic.

2003 Gretna team . 2004 was good also, bu03 had better defense.

When I go to D3 state championship game tomorrow, I am sure I will have some memories when Gretna went to Staunton River in 04 and scored 75 points.

The 4 Richlands state final teams are all technically 3A as well.

I played against Davis and he was a tough guy to bring down for sure. Tough to block and could bring it. He was a pretty good baseball player too if I recall - led off for them.

I thought the D3 Championship is played at Salem Stadium? Where is it this year and who is in it?

I played against Moon and the Haley Brothers.....all really good athletes. If my memory serves me right didn't Appomattox have a receiver that went on to play D1....does Lincoln Wood sound right?

Lindsay Fleshman played at JMU and arena ball. I believe he was after Haley and Moon though.

Yes, Lindsey was my boy back in the day. His son is a 9th grader and you may see him on the Varsity Basketball team this year. He is already dunking with ease. He walks and looks just like Lindsey. I wish he played football. He played in middle school, he was a TE if i remember. He is like 6'2 already.

Gate City 1970. Had 6 division one starters to include players at TN, VT, and Kentucky. That year, Tenn. High School was voted the number one team in the USA at seasons end by USA Today. That same team lost a four quarter scrimmage game to Gate City 22-7 in Kingsport. Around far SWVA, the old saying goes, Gate City was the "national champions" if Tenn High was voted number one at seasons end. That team is considered one of VA's best at any level.

The 1997 Deep Creek team that lost to Hampton in the region finals was among the second best teams I have seen. It had four VT starters including James Anderson at LB, Deangelo Hall, Darryl Tapping, and Josh Hyman
D. Hall is the best all around High School Player I have ever seen. He played QB, RB, slot, WR, and DB, and Safety and absolutely dominated. Of course, the Hampton team that beat Deep Creek was the national champions in one poll to include the Dick Butkus National Poll which was a big poll at the time.

Jefferson Forest of 1993 was a great one. The Graham of 89 got national attention by going unscored on for the first 8 or so games. Powell Valley had great teams with the Jones's, but the 80s championship teams were even better. The 80s P. Valley teams featured many Div one lineman.

The Phoebus teams of the early to mid 2000s were special. I watched Phoebus take it to Chris Leak and Charlotte Independence in a scrimmage in Charlotte. That Charlotte team finished number two in USA Today. Phoebus finished 8th. Both were undefeated in regular season. Phoebus was better though.

Finally, the Tabb teams of the 80s were dominant at their level and turned out lots of college talent including Terry Kirby and Chris Slade.

Glad to help. It all runs together for me too. Doesn't seem like over 30 years ago, but it is. I played in the old Seminole District and we had some serious rivalries back then in all sports.

Believe the Amherst team of 2007 was impressive. Included the Rose Brothers ( d1 recruits but all went to JMU), Derrick McCoy another VT target and several o-linemen that played in college at several schools like Shepherd college among others. They destroyed Shenando in state finals. Great games against Salem too

1994 Patrick Henry team was one of the best. Sent I believe 7 guys to play Division 1 including schools like Florida, VT, Boston College and Marshall. Best known of the bunch was Damien Woody who had a solid NFL career

Best teams I have seen play live, not in any particular order, 2007 Stone Bridge, 2007 Westfield, 2015 Appomattox, 2008, 2009 Broad Run (28-0), 1994 Handley Judges, 2012 Briar Woods, 2015 Clarke County, 2007 Goochland, 1980 Park View (Ster). 1996 Sherando.

Best Players, Allen Pinkett, Jeff Lageman (PV), Kelley Washington (Sher), Gage Steele (Warren Co), A.J. Brown (Liberty- Bealton) D.J. Coles (Goochland) Trace McSorely (Briar Woods), Adrian Tracey (Pot Falls), Mike Glennon,Eddie Royal, Evan Royster (Westfield), Brian and Michael Partlow (Handley) Ed Wang, Jonathon Allen, Ryan Burns (Stone Bridge), Zach Terrell (Manassas Park), Hunter Rogers, Sean McDonald (Clarke)...I probably missed a few, been around football a long time, best player I ever played against, the late Fulton Walker South Martinsburg, WV vs Loudoun County.

Best players that I ever saw Ronald Curry and Percy Harvin. No one is even close to those two.

They had 700 students at the time, definitely AA numbers. Even when they dropped down to A they were around 650 and one of the biggest A schools.

I would have to say the best player I've ever seen play was Ron Curry hands down. Nothing that kid couldn't do. Iverson and Hall were very close behind. Best "bigger" school team ever I would say the Crabbers in 97-98. They were a dynamic machine. Two best smaller schools wow there were many but two that stick out in my mind are PM 1977 14-0 undefeated team and the 2002 or 2003 William Campbell team. Both unstoppable offenses and vicious defenses.

The VHSL....LMAO. Now I know why they are wrong. Grades 10-12 had around 450-475 kids max. I know I was involved during those years.
VHSl numbers come from the school. Why would the school say they had 200 more kids than they really had?
