Hello to all my southern friends. I see via the weather channel that global warming has hit the south hard these past few days. I pray that you made it to Piggly Wiggly to purchase bread and milk in case something bad happens when the temperature dips below 32.
On to a more important subject, our basketball coach Rick Stansbury Naismith Wooden, Jr. As many know (or maybe noone knows) I used to be a huge Stansbury supporter. I had excuses for all the bad things that happen, all the bad losses, all the times we couldn't beat any ranked teams, all the times we went out early in the post season. Like many of the Stansbury sheep, I stood fast to those excuses, surely it couldn't be Coach Stansbury's fault that these things were happening! He is too nice a man and has such a sweet beautiful family. No way it is his fault. No way!
A short while back I had an epiphany of immense proportions. It *IS* his fault. It is his fault that he plays his starters 38 minutes a game and lets Romero Osby get 5 minutes. It is his fault that his bench players are so scared of getting yanked that they press and play poorly in the 4 minutes a game he allows them to play. It is his fault that our offense year in and year out is the ever popular "shoot the 3 and pray" (although with Varnado it is sometimes the hope Varnado gets 20 rebounds and doesn't miss his free throws offense). It is his fault that other coaches prepare for us better than we prepare for their teams, especially in the post season. It is his fault that he can't control his players or keep his players from leaving.
Our team will never progress past "barely making the tournament" with Stansbury as coach. Some of you, many of you, are happy with barely making the tournament each year. You are happy making excuses for losing games we shouldn't. You are happy saying that we cannot do any better. I say we can and should do better. It's time that the Stansbury era ends. When we miss the NCAA tournament this year he should be fired immediately.
Stay warm, and drink plenty of hot chocolate.
Happy New Year!
