He says he's not prepared to believe in John Bond. But he believes him when Bond states that he never talked to Kenny Rogers. Doyel wants his cake and eat it too.

That was his big story? Really? That's exactly what was reported two days ago with a few vague questions raised and yet more insinuation that Florida is leaking information. It's sort of an internet message board cliff's notes.

Solid reporting there. Probably gonna get a Pulitzer with that epic piece.

...the only thing he was able to write is essentially "I don't believe it... yet"?

Damn, dude...

I bet there is a thank you Gregg Doyel thread already started, with somewhere between 3-5 pages of replies.

First of all, when Phil Abernathy says "Bond never mentioned Kenny Rogers", he is not suggesting that Kenny Rogers is the wrong target. He is just protecting his client and saying that his client never brought Kenny Rogers name into this.

Second, I'll admit I have been curious about Bond's comment on the Buck and Kincade show. Kincade asks him, "So, John, you come across this old teammate who you feel is shopping the services of Cam Newton?"

And John answers, "Actually, there was two people in between us, but basically, yes, that' what happened."

Now that response is certainly curious. I could be wrong, but to me, that just means that Bond did not speak to Rogers directly. It does not reduce Bond to someone who just overheard gossip. Take another look at Bond's written statement, which was prepared by his attorney:

“During the 2009 football season, I was contacted by a former football
teammate, who represented to me that he was speaking for the Newton
camp. He told me that Cam Newton wanted to play at Mississippi State,
but that a specified payment would have to be made. I reported the
conversation to the Mississippi State Athletic Department. I was told
by the Athletic Department that Mississippi State would not respond to
the overture that was made to me, and that Mississippi State would
continue to recruit Cam Newton as it does any other football recruit.”

He specifically says an "overture" was made to him, and not that he was just listening to rumors of deals being made.

Kenny Rogers and John Bond didn't actually connect directly with one another, the whole thing's a sham. Got it. Wicked burn there Gregg. Did Bond perjure himself or something? This is the NCAA we're talking about here, it damn sure ain't the court system.

His statement says that Rogers contacted him, yet he was on the radio saying he never had contact with Rogers.

He's contradicting himself. I hope he doesn't come out of this smelling like ****, and I hope MSU keeps the **** off of them.

He also dismisses what Bond says as rumor, and then turns around and uses rumors to substantiate his attack against Meyer. </p>

UNLESS, the intermediary between Bond and Rogers was also a former teammate. Actually, not that unlikely.

On the radio, Bond said "I hadn't talked to him in 28 years since we played together."

This indicates that he did talk to him regarding the Cam Newton matter. Otherwise, he would have said "I haven't talked to him..."

Also, the question he was responding to with that answer dealt with whether or not he had an on-going relationship with Rogers since their playing days. His answer appears to indicate that he hadn't spoken to him until he was approached seeking payment for Newton's services.

Keep in mind that Bond's original statement was written by his attorney. I am sure every word in there was deliberate. There is a reason that Bond does not identify the "former teammate", although I don't know that reason.

Bond's original statement says "I was CONTACTED by a former teammate". That could mean all kinds of things. It could even mean that someone spoke with Bond on behalf of the former teammate.

No, his statement does not say Rogers contacted him. It says a former teammate did. ESPN is the one who brought Rogers into the story.
