Nice to see that Gretna has some quality athletes and skill players. This is one of the requirements of an effective spread offense. Without them, there are limitations. Without them, you must run the ball. And it all starts with that dual threat QB. Without him, might as well just run the Power I.

Average QB just doesn't cut it. But Gretna will start a true Freshman. And I was stunned that this kid has already been running the offense for years.

Where I came from in the Burg, this just doesn't happen. Youth programs run whatever the Coach decides. Middle Schools run whatever the Coach decides. Blocking, tackling and team is the most important. No one comes to Courtland knowing a damn thing about running the Wing-T. No one goes to Chancellor knowing how to run the Pistol. No one goes to JM knowing how to run the Spread.

WOW? a true freshman at QB? I know Vic Hall did it and was a great freshman QB. Gotta see this.

I thought the Malik Stone kid was a Senior last year? Him being at slot instead of QB is going to be dangerous. He is small but plays big. I cant stand to see him on the basketball court though. He talks more trash than anyone in the Dogwood District. LOL, He is a solid player on field and court. He plays with his heart.

It's strange how times have changed. When I was young, the trash talk kid simply got popped. in your face behavior got you popped. This was learned very young. Shut your mouth and play the game. Whatever it is.

I know at Courtland, if you talk trash, you're out of the game.

I hope this kid can stabilize the passing game... They have been in need of a qb since dyon rosser graduated.... I've hear this kid is highly thought of and has a lot of potential so we will see.... They have been one dimensional the last three years on offense. Hoping the defense will continue to improve as well particularly in defending the pass.

Gretna is known best for starting freshman QB. Yes they started Hall, but let's not forget Nick Miller who started from 07-10. Led Gretna to a state championship his freshmen year , got hurt his sophomore year (Gretna won another that year), led Gretna to the state semi's in 09, and another state championship in 10 where they lost to Gate City. Could be the start of something big. Gretna hands down has the best talent out of the Pittsylvania County Schools (Dan River is arguable but Gretna has the rings) and the Hawks run a good program. I expect a 8-2/7-3 season for Gretna.

Since about 2009, DR has had athletes to play with ANYBODY in the state. Guys who can put the burners on, big and strong lineman. They've had maybe 11 college players with 5 (Kymoni Fitz- Cincinatti, 3 Edmunds-VT/Maryland, OL Jake Waltman-Cornell) going major D1 in a 3 year period. They've had some studs that wasn't as academicially inclined that went D2-D3 or squandered opportunity along the way that were BALLAS too. That's darn good for a 2a school. It's rather upsetting that they have zero rings to show for it.

Actually it's sad that they only have 1 ring in basketball. The 2008/2009 team and the 2011/2012 team could play with ANYBODY in Single A- Triple A those years. Would've liked to see them play a Oak Hill or IC Norcom. They were good! Got too cocky and lost to Radford in the big game in 09 and Lancaster in 2012. They were scary good. This upcoming year's team should be good, not the same level as those 2 teams, but should win the state championship this upcoming March.
