To keep the ball away from a high-powered offense, attempting to limit scoring. It's just as helpful, if not more, than having a good defense, no matter the quarter.

Why would a team play clock management in first quarter ?
Playing against a spread type or no huddle team, you want to keep them off the field as much as possible. Run the ball. Run the clock. Don't hike it till there's only a few seconds left on the play clock. Keep their offense off the field. It's not only clock stragedy, it's game strategy. You may not like a game like that but you get the W however you can and there's no question it works. Certainly not always but it keeps you in the game.

I like to score as many touchdowns as possible in quarters 1 and 2, and have winner decided by halftime, then play backups in 2nd half. Never like for starters to be playing in 2nd half, especially in 4th quarter.
