Thursday Randos:

- Wow- it's already Thursday. Always a tough week coming back after Christmas, what with the post-holiday blues, cold weather and all the sleeping schedule adjustments.

- Taking 'er easy tomorrow night, may roll out and see the folks...and then Saturday should be a debacle. Cats @ Bama at 6. Who Dey's playoff game at 8:15. Plan to be out in Cincy to watch both. Have decided to relax my "No UK games in public" rule just a tad this year- being in public actually relaxes me some, and football is always better in a crowd.

With all that said, I expect the ol' double-whammy. Bama isn't a bad team at all. And the F'ing Bengals??? LOL Something tells me Cincinnati is going to be drunk and angry late Saturday night.

- Man, the Blue Line was a dope spot for the crew for about 3 months. I remember I had one hot little blonde I met on MySpace meet me there one night. Those were the days.

- @B.B.d.K., you may want to check out "Killing Fields" on Discovery. It's a mystery documentary series about the murder of a young woman near LSU in the late 90s- right about the time there were 3 active serial killers in the area. I have read a little about that era through the years and that time period somewhat inspired "True Detective." Only an episode in, the show itself is kind of hokey, but interesting nonetheless. Would be better as a straight-up doc series like "Making a Murderer."

- For the second time in two years, made it to the final interviews for a job I really wanted and was runner-up. Thought I had it both times. My closing skills obviously suck. I like my job and love my boss, so not desperate to leave or anything, but still.

- Where does Poythress rate as far as "Most Frustrating Players of Your Lifetime"? He's got to be up there, consider how his career began and his immense athletic talents. Rod Rhodes would have to be anyone's #1, but Poythress is in the conversation after that.

- Crock pot chicken fajitas last night were delicious. Lass even brought over some Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Nice little Wednesday evening. May have to use the crock pot more than 3x this year.

- 2016 trips on the horizon:

Atlanta to visit friends.
San Francisco to visit the lass's brother.
Boston in August for her friend's wedding- excited for her to show me her old college stomping grounds.
Possibly the Bahamas to visit her native land.

- Is it just me with UK basketball or does it seem like the entire season is a chore anymore? I love it, but it just seems like UK fans- including everyone here in GYERO- are just never happy. Even last year, we went 38-1 and still the season was a grind. People were worried and bitching. And I'm as guilty as anyone. We're in the midst of one of the great 7-year-runs of UK basketball history- arguably even college basketball history- and still it's stressful from November on. Maybe it's just because of Cal's freshmen philosophy and the growing pains, or maybe we've lost perspective a bit. I don't know.

2010 and 2012 weren't a chore. Pretty damn fun TBH.

Then again, watching John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, and MKG speaks for itself. 4 of the best players to ever suit up for the CATS!

We're spoiled, for one thing. Also, the reality is that college basketball doesn't really mean **** until March. Either you succeed in the tourney or you don't - it defines your season (especially for us) and that's stressful. The regular season is just a grind to get to what matters. I mean, does anyone get that excited about conference titles or regular season wins? They're great, but if things go wrong in March, you forget all about them. Being a UK basketball fan has become an "all or nothing" proposition and it kind of sucks in its own weird way.

4 episodes into Serial 2, still trying to figure out her angle. Are we just supposed to feel sorry for the deserter because he was tortured?

In honor of MKG (surprised there isn't a better video of this but whatever)...

Still think this is the nastiest dunk ever at UK.

[cheers] at the bench. Polson and Co. are dancing a good 1-2 seconds before the dunk. Hopping around like fools. [laughing]

This is true. 2010- especially coming off Tubby/Clyde- was a lot of fun. 2012 was about as drama-free as a season could be, including the tournament. Every other season has been stressful.

Exactly. I'm done with it. It's pretty cut-and-dried. The guy was an idiot and he and others in the military paid a heavy price for his idiocy. Now, he'll be in prison the rest of his life. Story over. Koenig really F'd up her second album.

2012 was stressful as hell when it came tourney time. How many people are here were shitting their pants over playing IU in the Sweet 16 and UL in the Final Four?
That Louisville game especially was just not "fun". For some reason I wasn't skeered at the IU game- I think the fact they kept replaying the shot in Bloomington all year and it was a shot for revenge made that seem like a no-brainer. But UL in the Final Four? Shew wee.

2010 was a fun regular season. But since then, I dunno.

Watching highlights of all of these 2012 dunks. Good lord. That team wasn't going to lose. What a ridiculous display of talent and swagger. The whole damn team has a highlight tape of dunks.

That's our "6th" Man.

Yeah, a little, but considering it was the NCAA Tournament and we didn't have a game that was closer than 8, that's pretty stress-free. There was a little "Holy ****- what if we lose to IU or Louisville" but mostly the fanbase was confident.

2012 was stressful to me because I knew we had the best team. When you have the best team and don't win, it is a f***ing kick in the teeth ... like last year. Because - realistically - you're not going to have the undisputed "best" team that often - even if you're Kentucky.

-I was thinking about the mentality of a UK fan just the other day. A few thoughts.
*2012 was fun but saying it wasn't stressful is a blatant lie. I was miserable in 3 of the 6 games. Near death in 1 of them. I mean playing IU and UL in the F4/S16.
*2013, obvious frustration.
*2014 was a rollercoaster of emotions.
*2015 fun *** year with a monumental letdown. It really took a lot out of me to the point it is still affecting me during this season. Geese nailed that.

The combination of being in the midst of a historic run that you know could end any time, coming off a decade of mediocre, really ramps up the pressure. Let's be honest, if Cal were to leave next year and only have 1 title with the talent that's come through... that's a bit of a disappointment. I think we're all a little worn out from the constant stresses of having a great team full of freshmen and the only goal is a title. High expectations = high anxiety.

Doing my best to Netflix and chill hoping the team progresses the way we've seen flashes.

-Not going back and reading notes on the LSU game.

-Nest T-Stats are cool but they're not really any more efficient than any other programmable stat. Tons of wifi capable stats out there now. I have 2 that I never use the wifi portion on. Not sure I feel like they're worth the expense sense you can buy a programmable stat for like 1/10 the cost but they do look cool.

-Re-injured my sprained ankle during a nap yesterday. How does that even happen?

-Did someone else ask a HVAC question the other day and I forget to respond?

2014 was the most fun tourney run playing as the "underdog" throughout. Different kind of fun whereas 2012 was fun, but felt like a march to the inevitable. Beating WSU, breaking UL's basketball program, who the eff is Marcus Lee beating a good Michigan team- those were fun moments.

I just assumed my enjoyment of the regular season was due to me getting old.

Regular season now consists of the marquee neutral site games, Louisville home or away, then the misery that is the SEC.

Neutral site games are cool, but not as fulfilling as home and home, imo. The Louisville game is awesome. The SEC's "WE ONLY CARE ABOUT THE KENTUCKY GAME" act has just worn thin, though.

I accept that is the way it has always been, but damn it, bring some personality to the table. Dale Brown, Nolan Richardson, Tennessee Bruce Pearl, Billy Donovan to a lesser extent, etc... those guys made the conference grind fun. I'm not sure that element is really there right now, which makes it completely joyless. Stansbury/Miss. State was great. Anderson/Arkansas are showing signs of it. Stallings/Vandy was there for a bit. Others?

The SEC needs great coaches (and has a bunch, actually), but it really thrives on big personalities. That's the only thing that can get mouthbreathing SEC football fan remotely interested. JMHO.

I thought Cal would get more under the skin of SEC coaches, but he hasn't really made them a target like I thought he might when he arrived. I guess he doesn't consider them his competition like he had to while at Memphis.

Last year was fun- but after the SECT I remember driving home from Nashville and having the same conversation with several Wildcat friends: "welp, pretty much all or nothing now". It was either going to be "40-0, let's just cancel college basketball from here on out Kentucky won the sport" or... well, what happened.

I still think there's some residual damage from that on the fanbase and maybe the program. I mean I that sucked. Probably not as bad as losing to UL in 2012 would have sucked, but bad. Plus after 2014 it's hard to get too up or too down in the regular season. I mean imagine if we had beaten UL and Duke in a regular season a few years ago, we'd still be sky high. It's all March now, which kinda stinks.

Geese nailed that the Wisconsin loss has affected UK fans even this season? Eeek, what a bold take! The whole damn fanbase feels that way.

This season is barely there IMO. It's like the rebound girl you date after a long relationship, and you pretty much treat her like crap, wax a lot, and that's about it. Not her fault. Just pisses me off. Even more that effing Duke won it. They stole our title in 2010 and 2015. We had the best team both years.

Well, the SEC just had it's best offseason for coaches in forever: Barnes, Howland, Johnson...Pearl the year before.

Maybe not the rivalries, but the coaching talent seems to have been upgraded. Of course, we lost Donovan (which I still forget from time to time)

No doubt. We just need those guys to become surly pricks. Colored blazers and sideline animation would also help.

Great overall post. Nailed it, as have others in the thread. With that said, the disappointment to me wouldn't be/isn't because of the talent we had- I recall EVERYONE (opposing fans, media, etc) saying how you just couldn't win it all with freshmen just 5 years ago. It's a tough task to win with young teams, no matter the talent level.

The disappointment to ME is because we have gotten so close.

2010: Heading into the E8, UK was the best team left and it wasn't all that close.

2011: Head into the F4 playing beautiful basketball, UConn wins a rock fight and has a cake title opponent in an undermanned Butler team we would've run.

2014: Same as 2011. Beautiful basketball, play UConn, rockfight.

2015: Just didn't get any breaks in the tourney- bracket lines us up with match-up problems ND/Wisconsin, no benefit from upsets, lose barnburner

I mean- look at how close we are to four more.

I'd say more than that, their TEAMS need to be good.

Think of every coach you listed...they most always competed, and beat us plenty over the years.

Billy Donovan marcus have fallen into a black hole. I know he's the coach of the Thunder, but I'm not sure that means anything. The team is about Durant and Westbrook, and the coach just needs to not screw it up. That's how the NBA is, I guess.

Me too. When we play Florida for the first time I'll probably jump on my twitter phone to see if Donovan is suspended or something. Then I'll do it again the next time we play them.

Basically being a sports fan is terrible. On one hand, I'm down on UK because they're not murdering everyone this year and I expect that, and when I don't get it, I'm unhappy. On the other hand, I'm down on the Bengals because they'll get murdered on Saturday, and I expect that, and when I get it, I'm unhappy. Maybe I should look into being a full time politard.

^ I can't recall even hearing his name this season.
I genuinely forgot he was there. There are about one or two NBA coaches who actually make a real difference - Pop and Stevens come to mind. But the rest? Hell, Golden State is murking people with GD Luke Walton holding the clipboard. You telling me he's a coaching savant?
