Ah. So Shep matters.

Don’t like the late Reeves bench. Your Sr, 7/9, 3-3, 3 dimes, no turns?

Why? And don’t tell me defense, bc he was as fine as anyone not named Reed. I appreciate getting others going…but it was legit scary winning time?

Oh well. Win
Because of his defense and he tends to disappear in tight games and/or rush bad shots. I would have put him back in for obvious ft situations though.

That was our first stinker of the year. It was good to pull away in Overtime. We need to get through the period of bonehead lineup choices phase of the season with minimal harm. Luckily, we only have 8 players getting minutes and only one tall player so it's harder for Cal to do irreparable damage.

Anyway, Wagner and Edwards doing something on offense was encouraging. Would have liked to see Shep and Reeves take more than 10 shots combined, but it is what is.

Overall, I'd still give Cal a A- for the season so far. The game tonight dropped it down from a A. Our shot selection is light years better than it has been in the previous seasons, propelling us to outperform preseason expectations thus far. Built in roster limitations prevents him from indulging in some of his worst lineup tendencies.

-I don’t trust Dillingham in the last 4. He has no measure of a bad shot and is too willing to gamble on steals for my liking.

F4 minutes give me DJ, Shep, Reeves, Edwards and Mitchell.

- Can’t wait for an arrogant response when asked why Shep wasn’t in at crucial times late.

- DJ was solid and I see why he and Edwards are so important. They can really defend.

- St Joes is a tournament caliber team with that kind of guard play.

St Jo is all in/do or die on the 3. Smoked everyone until last game (6/30)

They’ve legit Killed everyone else. Tonight they were 15/37

No excuses. But if you make 15 3s on 40%~ you’re gonna be in almost any CBB game, period.

That’s just basketball. Fault is all ours for allowing a one dimensional attack. They’re top 4-5 A-10 team, can’t let THEM dictate a game or how it’s played.

But that’s what our Coach does.

“Haven’t seen them. Only worried about us”

Etc.

Lol. K. Go Cats! Lotta positives too, move on…

Just got up after taking my treatment and Reed only took 1 shot?? WTF happened?

How can you not know that the team you’re playing is 6th in the country taking 3’s and not be prepared to defend it? Uneffingbelievable!

At least they didn’t choke in OT. Baby steps!

There are several things I flat out love:
  • We tried to do a 2 for 1 at the end of the first half for the first time since Rick Pitino was here.
  • We don't ever seem to have the classic Cal's shot clock violation (and btw, this is reason #1 I love Dillingham. That fella isn't afraid to pull). I also think Reed's decision making helps with this too.
  • We legit have three dudes who can easily create their own shot (Wagner, Reeves, Dillingham), another in Sheppard who can make a play / pass to get you a shot, and a fifth in Michell who can get you a high percentage shot in the post or pull from 23. If Edwards truly comes around we'll have 6 guys who can provide real offense and that doesn't count Thiero who scored double digits against KU. We haven't had offense like that since at least Herro's squad.
  • We are scoring in the 90's. I'd much rather win a game 95-87 than the old 65-54 that Cal seems to love.
  • We ran some inbounds plays (WHATTTTT????)
There are things that need to be improved:
  • Rebounding (they say it's important)
  • Getting cute on defense (Reed and Dillingham, I'm looking at you).
But damn, I'll take the bad with that much good all day long.

Has all the feel of the first Pitino team. Scrappy, young dudes thrown together at the last minute. Lots of chips on shoulders and something’s to prove. Always short handed and undersized and constantly overachieving.

Only difference is this team actually has a decade plus HOF coach and a roster full of 5 stars.

Pretty maddening at the overall picture but, in spite of the coach, the players themselves are so much fun.

That was pretty good... but I will say we have small guards who occasionally get lost on D. The biggest issue was the lack of rebounding which led to a ton of second chance points.

You forgot a y. Xzayvier.

* We are absolutely terrible on defense right now. All of our guards are legit bad on-ball defenders, including Reed. That is highlighted by our lack of rim protection.

In the long run, I think it is actually going to be a net positive for our guards that we don't have a single big who can block a shot now. Usually against scrubs, we will have a big who can erase a lot of mistakes. Not this year. They are on an island and they have to get much better fast, which I think will happen.

* We lose that game with the last 3 squads. We won last night. That's the sort of undefinable change that Billy Joe Wildcat can sense and stats will never capture. Something has changed.

* I don't care if he had 12 points -- Justin Edwards is bad right now. (He was the only player with a negative +/-, btw). He takes terrible shots, gunks up the offensive flow, doesn't rebound, and is average at best defensively. He needs to get better in a heartbeat if we are going to reach our potential.

Cal hinted that it might be a lack of work ethic with him, which would be somewhat heartening because that can fixed quickly.

Not discouraged by what happened last night.

Teams that win with any significance do so because they have multiple playmakers with the skill and the balls to score in big moments. The final 10 minutes of regulation and the OT was pressure packed in that arena and a bunch of guys stepped up offensively. We simply haven't had that for a while and deep tournament runs require it.

The defense will come along and let's pray we get a big at some point able to dress.

There were spurts where the defense was just really bad, no communication, looking lost on simple ball screens, or just flat not knowing what to do- which was frustrating... and we certainly werent clutch down the stretch of regulation- but to get out with a win was *fine*

Getting to the rim for easy buckets when you want to should be the game plan for most teams against us until we can (next season maybe) get a big man back in the rotation.

Shep's going to have some *youth* moments and maybe isnt the threat to score on any given possession- but I would feel better with him on the court down the stretch.

Spent 4 days in Cashiers at High Hampton over the weekend. Big mountain guy. The lack of cell service was amazing. Golf course (Fazio) was about perfect and one of the more interesting/fun courses i've played in a while. Temps in the 50's, little fog in the morning, visited by a ton of deer and the occasional family of bears- ideal spot.

Thanksgiving menu is set. Simple:

Smoked chicken and Pork Tenderloin
Mac and Cheese with Conecuh sausage
Roasted Brussels
Garlic Potatoes
Green Beans
Pot of burgoo

Whatever desert someone else brings.
