Fans generally have very short memories, and a great team this season could make people look back at the past few years and forget -- the wacky COVID year, the "fluke" loss to St Pete's, the disappointing season in '23. But damn, how can Cal get past another disastrous season this year? Like, if we win 0-1 games again in the SEC/NCAA tournament.

This season felt so right coming in. Tons of NBA level talent. Senior leadership. Depth at every position. High octane offense. Guards that can shoot the lights out. Fun as hell to watch. The national media hyping us up. If *this* team can't deliver....

😬

If that's the outcome, he still probably won't get fired, but I'm not sure how anyone could argue he anything other than a Dead Man Walking.

-So now that we managed to lose that game, it’s great to see Cohen linked to the Boston College head coaching job and the Bucs OC job. Dude is taking interviews ANYWHERE, it’s never ending. Just go, you don’t want to be here and the kids are going to realize that.

Exhausting prima donnas, ffs.

-Did a teledoc visit for the first time at 0700 this morning. Ten minute wait, 3 mins with doc and script for anti inflammatory eye drops is in, damn that was easy.

-The barbs thrown between “friends” on here during a loss cracks me up. Thanks for the entertainment.

-Starting back at bjj today at noon and stoked.

-I was hoping to go to my first FF with my buddy that lives in Phoenix but not buying those tickets now or at least yet.

I’ll hold back on my feelings for Cal until Saturday, but with both teams falling in “trap” games leading into Saturday I’m not terribly excited.

Adou is legit hurting and tried to play thru it. A back issue is nothing to play around with so I’d really like to know what was up with Wagner/Edwards.

Ugo starts with Reed, Reeves and Mitchell. The last spot goes to Wagner/Adou and I still like my team, ALOT.

Damn it!!!!! Just make the game easy and f’ing foul.

- Glad to see Rex is:

* Opening up
* Getting real
* Clapping back

- If I have to see our team piss away another big lead the two minutes before and after halftime again, I’m going to throw my F’ing TV out the window.

- What a bonehead play by Shep. The MFer had 6 threes already. You should be face guarding him. I guess Cal failed to pass that along.

- UNC Wilmington is costing us a seed line by themselves. And we haven’t even gotten into the thicket of SEC play. Another 4-5 seed?

- It’s the ****** basketball, the dumb losses. But this program and its constant drama is the worst thing. It’s exhausting. Second time Wagner has sat this year when I guarantee he could have played. It’s always something. We’ll baby someone else on Saturday. So-and-so will be in street clothes because of a hangnail.

- BBdK has brought it up multiple times- bad losses are pretty common this season and college basketball is a sport where a
bad month can not really mean anything. It’s all about March and we have a Top 5 roster. Problem is - the fanbase has completely lost trust in Cal.

People can make whatever excuses for Cal year after year. It’s always something.

He gets more $ to build a basketball roster than we do for a 85 man football roster. There are dozens of coaches, with the same resources, who could do much better.

The only argument that seems reasonable to me is Mitch could make a bad hire. When I see the contracts he negotiated and the coaches he has hired in the past.

Cal hasn’t been feared by an opposing coach or fanbase in years. For good reason.

- I’d argue now is a pretty good time to make a basketball hire. There are some strong candidates we could pull - off the top of my head:

Drew
Lloyd
Oats
Payne

- Man that Keshaud Johnson loss continues to haunt. He could have masked some of our defensive deficiencies.

I’ll add one small bit of optimism-

If I had to choose one thing to have in my pocket- offense or D - headed into February, it would be offense.

We have four guards who can go off for 25-30 points on a given night.

It’s better to need to figure out D instead of O at this point.

At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.

This program is about the names on the back of the jerseys, not the front, PLAYERS FIRST!! It fosters a sense of entitlement, softness, players don’t want to do the hard things that win ball games. Check in for a few months, don’t hurt your draft stock too bad (of course if you’re worried about that, it’s ok to simply not play) and head on out.

I’m sure Cal would prefer to win than lose, but winning games and titles is not at the top of his priority list and I’m not really sure it’s even second. The guy’s ego is so big he doesn’t even feel an obligation to win as many games as he can. We can all list a dozen things he could do differently but quite frankly he doesn’t give a ****.

Nothing is gonna change as long and he is in charge here. The only way he leaves is if people stop showing up to games. The coach and players (most of them) aren’t serious about winning so why should we continue to support them?

Multiple times last night in key moments whatever it was we were trying to run guys just did not know or not well coached enough to find their spots. We are constantly attempting to direct them to even their starting points from the bench on where people need to be Reeves included, this is FEBRUARY. Just a tight chaotic mess when it matters.

Of course, we can offensively blow a team in the tournament off the floor although we have all seen how this story ends a one-dimensional team breaks down when in fact the team should have so much more in their bag.

Its been said but its not just the losses its the "WE'LL SEE" on whether we are going to have a GD complete roster week to week. These are now grown men making more than 99% of fans in the crowd. Its not just the losing its the attitude of the program that needs a major kick in the ***, it starts at the top. He does not get it.

Keshaud Johnson
Chad, you ignorant slut, his GD name is KESHAD. You're supposed to be a college basketball. Get your head out of your ***.

* Ugo looked like young Jarvis Varnardo last night.

* If we don't do it this year, we will go (at least) a decade between Final Fours.

* I had fallen in love with this team. The honeymoon is over, I guess.

What a dicklick of a game. This is Kentucky. We aren't supposed to lose by failing to follow basic fundamental basketball knowledge down the stretch.

* I guess Wagner is better than he looks out there.

I think covid broke AAU ball, which in turn ruined Cal's competitive advantage of cleaning up blue chippers. Those blue chippers in 2024 are no where near as tough/ready as they were before the shutdowns.

Of course Cal also lost his MOJO in that 2015 Whisky game and then got the contract. We're in a perfect storm of overpaid, under-producing jagoff, that doesn't want to be here but the money is too good to leave, and we still can't afford the buyout.

At least the sun is put today.

You can like our roster all you want but 2 things will be the death of this team:

* We are extremely bad at on the ball defense. It’s not happenstance we give up so many open 3’s. We can’t contain dribble
penetration and are constantly forced to help.

* You pay for all of your past sins on Selection Sunday. If you’re a fng 5 seed you will be playing a tough opponent in the 2nd round. If you’re a 4 seed you’re on course to play a 1 seed in the Sweet 16.

I want to be positive. I really do. I want to find real moments of joy with this program like we used to all of the time in the golden eras of Rick (89-97) and the first 6 years of Cal (10-15).

I’m not a SMART FAN but I’ve been doing this long enough to know a Final Four team when I see one. This isn’t it.

And that’s where I am with Cal, Final Four or bust. This roster was constructed for a title run but title contenders don’t lose to UNCW at home or have 3 conference losses in January including 2 bad losses.

Also, 9 years without earning a 1 seed is unacceptable with the talent and resources Kentucky has.

Reflections on Last Night:

Not freaking out about last night. DJ is important. We need all three guards.

I love the guy, and he's our best offensive player, but Reeves is not a guard. He's a 3, minimum. He's almost like an NBA stretch 4 sometimes in terms of where you place him on offense. He's at his best when you place him in the corner and let him work from there up to the wing.

That said, there are fixable issues that I'm worried Cal is not addressing:
  • Reed gambles too much on D; I'd usually chalk it up to Reed being tired by Cal playing him 45 minutes, but he does this when Cal plays him 25 minutes.
  • Dillingham does way too much dumb **** - he needs to get that under control
  • Edwards, in general
Christian Twitter:

During my hiatus, I spent some time on Twitter and the algorithm got me connected to Christian Twitter. What a mess. It's a continual fight between the following types of people:
  1. Leftwing bald pastors with beards who claim the lack of LGBT support are why churches are dying
  2. Rightwing MAGA guys saying that the support of LGBT is why churches are dying
  3. Leftwing soft 6 women saying that the church's support of "trads" is why churches are dying
  4. Rightwing hard 7's saying that the church's push against "trads" is why churches are dying
I feel like the simple fix would be for 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 just form their own churches, but I think they'd rather fight it out on Twitter. It's terrifying, yet, I cannot look away.

Taylor Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs:

Regarding Taylor Swift and NFL coverage. Yes, I know the outrage over the outrage is played out, but I've yet to see anyone argue what I think is really going on.

My son is 8 and hates seeing Taylor Swift at KC games. He doesn't get it from me, and it's not like he's reading conservative Twitter which tells him to be anti-Taylor. It's 100% because for the last 9 months his sisters (and even his mother at times) have made Taylor Swift a major part of their personalities. He's done with it. He's tired of hearing her music every time he goes upstairs. He's tired of seeing her face plastered all over his sisters' rooms. So he doesn't hate Taylor per se, he hates how overboard the women in his life have gone over her. And I know grown women in my neighborhood who have gone even bigger fan girl over her. So yeah, I get why the men who are around these women have had it.

No deconstruction Twitter yet Wayne? A bunch of people who have abandoned the faith they grew up with but justify it on some intellectual/moral high ground and blame everyone else.
Oh, I went down a big rat hole on that one!

"Hey, so I started coloring my hair purple, got pregnant out of wedlock by a felon, quit the church because they aren't supportive of my new lesbian girlfriend, called all of the people at my church bigots, and now nobody from the Church comes around to support us. I knew this religion was phony. #deconstruction"
