It would help if the opposing team actually had to guard our bigs. I'm still not convinced Willis was anywhere near 100%.
When Indiana had that shot clock violation but the refs had to go to the video to see it was kind of a kick in the nuts as a reminder they couldn't do that last year.

I'll tell you what sucks most about UK losing this time. Is that when UK normally loses in the tournament, Anth takes a week off gyero, so he can act like super fan, like he was just so upset he couldn't bear to talk about the loss on gyero[eyeroll]
And this time he didn't. That's the worst part by far.

I just get pissy and petty when we lose. A horribly unattractive quality but, you know, get pumped or whatever if you don't like it.

Shooting cures a bunch of ills but it still doesn't change the fact our offense was a complete 180 to what made it so effective the 2nd half of the season.
Go back and watch the tape if you must. A lot of Murray's **** was challenged because he was trying to create ala November. Ton of ball watching. Not very many of his looks were catch-n-shoot. Ulis would probe for 27 seconds then you'd see a late ball screen for low a percentage jack. Not exactly winning basketball, bad percentages or whatever.
- 3 people in for Louisville? Man, that fizzled fast. Pretty pathetic, IMO. Lex still going strong, too.
I know. What annoyed me were all the pick-n-rolls with Lee- who is a decent rim-runner but no threat to knock down the J.
Even so, Murray went 6-26 the last 3 games. Just picked a terrible time to go cold- good looks or not.
This damn season. smh

So the Lexington basketball group is going to last longer even though everyone is chipping in money each week? Sounds about right.
Ford now projecting Ulis as a potential late lotto guy so I guess the BJW in me can finally accept that he is gone.
If Ulis somehow makes the lottery that's one of the coolest off-the-court things that's happened under Cal. I'm not even talking about building our brand, or the message it sends to recruits about what Cal can do or any of that... Just for Tyler, that would be cool as hell.
I work late tonight so I couldn't come anyway, but I'm going to have to work myself back into being able to play. After last time my knees hurt for several days. I'm running the marathon at the end of next month and I need to run every day. Once I get the marathon behind me I plan to get out there and suck it up until my knees get used to it again. Then I think it'll be fine, but right now I can't take 3-4 days off running or I'm gonna be in a world of hurt next month.

* It is a shame Tyler Ulis had to be this team's best player. For his size, he was as dominant as he could be but that guy (for all of his badassery) is Robin, not Batman. He needs to create for others. With the supporting cast, there wasn't much to create. Murray got his own shots. Willis could spot up. Lee could lob. And that was pretty much it.
While it was usually beautiful to watch, it was a shame that Ulis had to take on so much of the scoring responsibility.
I think Ulis will thrive in the pros in an Avery Johnson sort of way. I hope the Spurs take him at the end of the first round and groom him as a back-up point guard for a decade.
* We need Briscoe back next year.
Fox and Monk look awesome and Hawkins will be plucky and clutch, but I worry that Cal is going to try to out-Cal himself and go way too big with Gabriel, Killeya-Jones, and Willis at the 3 all year. It didn't work with Poythress last year.
We will hear all season about being "positionless" but showing a college four at the three spot is a tried and true way to sacrifice offense for defense, especially freshmen who have almost no experience on the perimeter.
Briscoe is positionless, too, in that he's burly enough to play the three in college and get tough rebounds and he makes the offense function more efficiently with his ball handling.
Briscoe provides a lot of options, even if he can't shoot.
* In a related note: does Cal hate the 6'7 college swingman? He's recruited basically every other type of prototype you can get in college basketball, other than a Ron Mercer type. The closest he's gotten was Gilchrist. Could just be the breaks of recruiting, but we have yet to have a crafty small forward who can score.
* We are going to be bigger that T-Will's prolapse next year.
Lee 6'9
Willis 6'8
Humphries 7'0
Wynard 6'10
Bolden 6'10
Adebayo 6'9
Gabriel 6'10
Killeya-Jones 6'10
Monk 6'4
Fox 6'3
Briscoe (?) 6'3
Hawkins will be our only contributor who could even conceivably be smaller than whomever he is guarding, unless Briscoe comes back and takes a few minutes at the 3 or we run into a really big 2 guard.
Calipari usually excels with that kind of line-up but it can be sometimes ugly to watch.
Oh well, I hope we go full Darth Vader next year and strike back.

I don't know why you wouldn't draft Ulis in the lotto. Chris Paul is just 3 inches taller and he's done just fine. I mean, he was defensive player of the year in a major conference, so that should set some GM's minds at ease a bit.
If you pass on Ulis, you will absolutely regret it. There's not a PG in the draft I'd take in front of him. Obviously I'm very biased, but he's unreal, and will carve people up in the NBA as well.

Ticket prices are the cheapest in the tourney. $50/per. For a regional. [laughing]
Good, f*ck them for screwing up a sure thing.
I'm not sure he will plays next year, but if he does then it is another big defender with offensive liabilities to throw out there at the 2 and 3.
I thought it was understood that Pee wasn't really a McDonald's AA. More like a leftover Rally's AA that someone found in between their seat and the car door and tossed it into the McDonald's bag to give to their ******* roommate when they got home.
Basically.
Basically.
There's gotta be another early defection beyond Ulis, Murray, and Skal. Cal doesn't want 50 players here and we are still recruiting like we have an open spot. Mulder won't play a minute. Lee will get pushed down the depth chart. Maybe even Matthews decides this isn't for him. Someone else will be gone through some means other than early NBA entry before next fall.
Malik Monk tweeted a Jason Aldean video.
I'm impressed by his choice in genre, if not the particular artist.

Over Poythress and Skal? Lee was Top 10-20. He hasn't developed at all, but Poythress and Skal were both #1 on NBA big boards at a point in time.
This had a lot to do with this:
One of the biggest differences in the game was IU's 2H defensive adjustment on our high pick-and-roll set. They prevented Ulis from turning the corner with a really aggressive high hedge, and then denied the skip pass to the wing. On at least 60% of our 2H possessions, IU stopped UK from even getting into its primary offensive set.
This was the exact same approach Alabama threw at us in Tuscaloosa. Except, in that game, Poythress drifted off the screen when his defender over-extended. It's GD infuriating that Poythress could've had a career game (or at least 2H) if he wasn't such a GD *****.
:flush:
Kudos to Jonathan Blue with all of the good happenings right now in Cuba. Without him there's just no way possible we could even entertain the thought of President Obama stepping foot on Cuban soil.
-Cal has recruited plenty of true 3's, just hasn't landed them.
-We all knew pretty early on this season was not the year. We had a punchers chance given a decent draw, which we didn't get. After last year I'm just not going to be a ***** about the loss. Was back on GAMBOL after the game. It sucks, but nothing like last year.
-Poythress coming back and Willis getting injured. Those two things come to mind over the last few weeks. Cal kept going back to that Poythress/Lee/Briscoe/Ulis/Murray lineup. I guess for D and boards. We struggled all season when we played that group mainly. Lee/AP should have been sharing time at C and Willis/Skal at PF. When you only have 2 players on the court that can shoot you're going to have issues. Goes against my rule of 3.
-I think Cal would be fine with that even though I would Assume Mulder jets for somewhere else. I'm almost positive Lee said he was coming back to UK. Although I can't find it. Having him back in a solid 7th-8th man scenario is a great thing.

- There is no way in hell Tyler Ulis won't be successful. I don't know if he'll be a star (hell, he might) but there's no way he's not a valuable contributor.
- Guess I'm most excited for Fox and Monk who should be ridiculous together on both ends, but what a nice change it should be having Adebayo and Gabriel- both known to be athletic as all hell and tenacious rebounders.

Poythress battled injuries and played out of position a bit, but he's also delivered some big time performances. Skal had a bad rookie year which unfortunately is his only sample size here.
Marcus never did much at all in his 3 years. Good dude, seems to work hard and whatever- but he seems to have regressed.

Alex is a great kid, one of the best, and did some nice things here overall -- but I'm pretty pumped about him not being on the floor or taking up 20-25 minutes anymore. Been about 7 years in the making...
Be pretty cool if Lee were to address ANY of his issues, just one would be cool. He's been the same player since his first day on campus. He'll be a nice piece to have off the bench, but also looking forward to not really "needing" him either.
Yes, Fox/Monk can shoot a little bit, but we're still not going to have a single designated shooter, unless you count Willis, who could *easily* get lost in the shuffle. Cal basically looks for any reason not to play him, even after admitting he was THE reason for our turnaround. Smh.
We're going to be deep/loaded with talent & size next year for certain, but put me down in the "Let's wait and see what kind of team we have" camp. Competition will be stiff again next year.

Not sure why everyone is down on Matthews. You guys know that the rest of college basketball pretty much depends on freshmen growing into juniors and seniors who can contribute, right? It's okay for us to sprinkle a couple of those in once in awhile. Is he great now? No. He probably won't be great next year either, but I bet when he's a 21-22 year old who's actually had time to grow into his body, know the offense and defense, and develop his game, you'll be damn glad he's here. He's not a typical Cal freak of nature, but he can play.
Skal is the biggest bust, IMO.
Pre-season top 2 pick in the NBA OMGZ CAN'T MISS FRANCHISE GUY all the way ----> GTFO take the money & run your handler is a POS don't want to mess w/ the 2016 mojo TIA.
*Will say that Skal showed some impressive amounts of that 'Daniel Orton passive aggressive **** away from the ball'. He was good for one or two random pushes/chicken wings/awkward scrums a game. He may be a great kid off the court but he's got ***** tendencies out there, which would have been more prevalent had he been more productive and actually stayed on the court.

Cal pretty clear hates Native Americans. Wouldn't shock me if Mrs. Cal wrapped Willis' birthday brownies in a small pox blanket.
Fox
Monk
Willis
Gabriel
Bam
^ that's my preferred starting 5 next year to *begin* the year. If Briscoe is back, take out Gabriel and slide Willis to the 4.
Plenty of minutes left for Gabriel, Lee, SKJ/Izak, Matthews.
