I'm on vacation last week in Florida and see a couple of 20 somethings in State gear. I say hello, good to see some fellow bulldogs and they say "hail state" and then tell me, authoritatively I might add, "it's what we say now," like I was some old dude that's completely out of touch. We conversed for a minute or two and I told then to have be careful and have fun and they dropped another "hail state" on me. I was compelled to see it back but thankfully was able to control the compulsion.

I am getting this more and more too. I have noticed with middle aged people like myself, I'm hearing a lot of, "Go Dawgs". I don't even know what to say back. I think I'm going to stick with Hail State.
Judging by your reaction there's a good possibility you may be an old dude that's out of touch. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I don't hate the 'hail state' thing, but I just feel like a goober saying it. 'Go dawgs' is a little more comfortable, so if someone insists on exchanging state greetings I'll usually default to that.
"Hail State" sounds much better than any of the old things like "how bout them dogs" or "go dogs". "Hail State" is probably the best piece of marketing since LT was run off.
I was in Pensacola two weeks ago. I was eating at a dive called Triggers (it may have had more in the name, but that's what the guys I was w/ called it.) in comes a early 30s looking guy w/ a state hat on. I greeted him with a Hail State ( i'm 38 mind you) he said it back with a smile and moved on. No big deal.... Didn't seem uncomfortable or out of place to me.
I agree with both points here. I like the hail state thing because its unique, but if I'm greeting an MSU fan in public I'll say Go Dogs.
My wife on the other hand was a hail state person before I remember the athletic department really pushing it. She was saying it 10 years ago.

I'd have to disagree about it sounding better. It may be better because only we say "hail state", like another poster mentioned. I like "go dawgs" best, but that's just my opinion.

For years, I've always said "we've got some Dawgs up in here!" every time I see a fellow MSU fan somewhere. People always respond well to that. I guess "Hail State" is where we're headed though.
I'm in SW Missouri and see a lot of tourist in my place of business; these folks are from all over the Midwest and Southeast. Being 50 "HailState" is not my first thought but it has become a nice way to start up a conversation or just to acknowledge a fellow Bulldog. Good bet is that when I see a big M State or a Bulldog some where I'm not dealing with a sidewalk alumni.

Yes it was... I was doing some work on the base a few weeks ago. It was the best place I ate all week.
I too was in Pensacola Beach last week and got greeted by a perfect stranger with Hail State!!! I responded in kind and asked if he had a connection to MSU and he said " I'm an Auburn grad but both my sons are at MSU ...... they love it up there......called it the friendliest campus they had ever been on ..... raised War Eagle fans but became Dawg fans!!!!! wow!!

I never cared much for it myself but its no big deal either way. It does sound alot like the Auburn fans passing each other, raising their right hand and saying "War Eagle" to each other and continuing on their way, like 2 indians passing each other and saying "How". Or should I be pc and say native americans for the sensitive crowd?
Bingo!!! That is why the Hail State saying is great!...
I grew up on "Go Dawgs" but when you say that outside Mississippi 90% of the people in the Southeast think you are talking about Georgia. I LOVE having a slogan that is fully unique to us and everyone knows, even bystanders, who you are referring to. Hail State should be fully embraced.

Its sort of a sentimental reminder of my favorite MSU squad ever - the 1999 team. Plus, i just can't stand Hail State, and I will not greet anyone with it. Unless Jackie walks up to me and says, "Hail State, son." Then i probably will cave in at that point.

Why does it seem so forced? It's been our freaking fight song for 100 years. I think promoting and branding Hail State has been a great move by our athletic dept. You probably also don't like wearing maroon or white like everyone else in your section too.
I'm an old 17er at 60. God I can't believe I'm that old. Anyway....Hail State is kind of growing on me. I've always been a 'go dawgs' type. But I've noticed my black bear friends seem to cringe more when I say Hail State. Guess I will be sticking with that.

Good question. What is the proper response to a "Hail State"? Do you reciprocate a Hail State? I originally responded "Go Dawgs" out of habit but have more recently switched to "Hell Yeah" We need a poll.
To me, this thread is kind of showing how marketing works...
For some reason, people are fighting the Hail State thing... but I think it's brilliant and I think it's catching on. It's unique to us, separates us from other institutions, and gives us a trademark-able brand slogan.

By the late fifties, Mustang rooters had changed the meaning to … pony ears. Baylor was next. In 1960 cheerleader Bobby Schrade came up with the idea of holding the hand aloft with all five fingers curved to suggest a bear claw. Only alcohol had a harder time getting accepted on the Baptist campus. For twelve years students and administrators argued whether the sign was sufficiently dignified before it was formally blessed in 1972.

I usually throw out a Hail State when I see a fellow Bulldog here in NYC.
I also always throw out a GTHOM whenever I see a Rebel. That always throws people for a loop.

I do like "hail yeah" because it makes me laugh more than "Hell yeah," but either one works for me. I also think "Go Dawgs" always works.
When I was a kid, my dad took my family to an away game in Maryland, I think, and I'm pretty sure he told my brother to ask other State fans, "What's the good word?" so they could respond with "Go to hell, Ole Miss" (which is a lot like Georgia Tech fans do with Georgia, except obviously they say "To Hell with Georgia.") Was that not a really a thing that other State fans said?
