Can we at least have our divisions back now?

Pretty obvious the various committees could care less how many conference games the SEC plays, or against whom. I know part of the angst against them here was to further discredit Stansbury, but it really would be nice to have something else to play for in the conference. It seems clear that SEC postseason bids are going to be few and far between for a while.

I hate OM, but something is wrong when you are close to NCAA and miss NIT...

All the automatic qualifiers, plus the traditional powers in NCAA basketball are making it very difficult for the non powers to get into the NCAA tournament. I hate the selections more and more every year.

Of course they didn't. Their RPI is 94.

The NIT is selected along the same lines as the NCAA Tournament (this hasn't always been the case, but it has been for years). Teams with RPIs in the 90s never make the NIT these days unless they get an automatic bid (by winning their conference regular season but not their conference tournament).

Not exactly true. The last two years six teams in the 90s have made it in as at large teams, plus another five in the 85-89 range. Iowa made it with a nice 131 two years ago.

There were a bunch of small conference teams that won the regular season title

but didn't win their conference tournament, which meant no NCAA tourney but an automatic bid to the NIT. Probably close to half the NIT field were made up of automatic qualifiers like that. In past years, UM would've made it but this year there just wasn't enough room once you got past the auto qualifiers and then the teams that barely missed the NCAA tourney.

A lot of people think the NIT is still like the old days when they would take any SEC team with a record above .500. That hasn't been the case since the NCAA bought the NIT. Now, the NIT picks teams mostly based on RPI, and usually if two teams are pretty close, they give the bid to the mid-major over the major conference team (although really, the SEC is a mid-major in basketball these days).

I wouldn't say it was a bunch in comparison to previous years. This year it's 13 out of 32 are in as champs, with 19 at large. That champion number is up a smidge from the last two years when it was 11 champion and 21 at large in 2012, and 10 champion and 22 at large last year.

Huge slap in the face ...

USM is # 3 seed in NIT

SMU in NIT, as well

Know that there are 'bubble' tems every year but hard to explain ...
"Southern Miss earns the distinction of being the first team in NCAA history with an RPI ranking of 32 or better and 25 or more wins to its credit, and not get into the NCAA Tournament."

That's 2-3 fewer NIT bids available for the Bears this year than in the past 2 years. That's pretty significant if they were on the bubble.

So, apparently ...

I guess the NIT didn't want MH, as much as some people thought they did.

watching the Marshall Henderson is not the same draw to the rest of the country as it is to the OM faithfull.

Hope that this doesn't cause the OM Admin to 're-examine' AK too closely. Gotta hope that ~ $3MM payout will keep him around for a while longer.

You really do need to be a true bubble team or small conference champion to be assured a spot. Mediocre large conference teams haven't really been guaranteed a spot since the NCAA took it over.

Possibly. If you used the CBI invite list as the NIT bubble though, they weren't close to the NIT.

Probably didn't help them any that 4 SEC teams were already in the NIT field (which also kinda refutes all of you saying the NIT doesn't take many teams from major conferences).

All those years we felt shafted with an RPI in the 50's and 60's... This is pretty inexcusable for the committee.

Looking at the teams in the CBI, I don't think there's any question Mississippi would have been in there if they had expressed any interest in pursuing a bid.
