About ten years ago I did business with a family owned company in Tampa, Florida. They made liquid cleansers for the dollar store chains and sold other things - I was a vendor. The elder guy in the business was a “Seminole to the max.” His office had a big 5 foot circular Seminole rug on the wall behind his desk. It was a thing of real beauty. Inever went to Florida Stateand I still loved it - classy. His Florida State Seminole Football helmet was on the corner of his desk and his jersey from his playing days framed on the wall across from his desk. He lived and breathed that school. You might know him.

I don’t know how to put it any other way. He had more money than the Pope.

I was in his office one day and he started talking about his support of Florida State Football. To understand my story, he was not bragging. He had too much money to brag about what he did. These are a few of the things he said. I will never forget how casually he talked about his support of that team.

He said that he had four players on the team. He said that after each game, he had full access to the locker room from his playing days and his money. He saidhe always carried four packetsof billseach containing five $100.00 bills folded and paper-clipped together in his pocket. His guys all knew him and when he came in they would be in front of him really quick. With each hand shake, he transferred $500.00 to each of his guys. Then he had a number of $100.00 bills folded in the other pocket and he would shake hands with other players as he chose.

He said that they went to (the Orange Bowl? I think) One year and after the game, he went to his guys and told themHe never had a chance to get an Orange Bowl warm-up sweat suit and would they consider selling their warm-ups to him for $1000.00. They all said yes and he paid them and said he would drop by campus in a month or so to get them. He laughed and said he never showed up to pick up the sweats he purchased.

He gave tickets away to all the Florida State home games. He used them as business gifts. He bought them from his guys. He tried to give me tickets, knowing that I would not be in town for the games. He said it was “rude to not offer them, because he liked me.”

Why am I telling this? I think at some level of money – much more than I have, the really rich guys just do this. I have no idea how you can keep them out of the locker room to stop it. If you did, they would just do it outside, or drop by the dorms.

My friend is dead now. His son is a big fan and I guess he does it for his dad now. I haven’t seen him in seven or eight years, since his dad’s funeral.

That level of school support is really strange. I won’t say it doesn’t happen at MSU. I know one or two people at that level of wealth, and I know they don’t do what my Seminole Buddy did. Doesn’t mean that others don’t.

Also, it is in a completely different font that normal on this site, which would lead me to believe it has been copied and pasted.

It could be as real as rain, but I ain't buying this.

(That's not to say similar things do not happen.)

real and true. First time ever typed anywhere. I could give a flip whether you believe it. What could possibly make you think I would?

Actually wrote it as a tribute to a good friend and business associate. Did it sound like what he did ever bothered me?

Would hate to PO a young guy with a$10.00 handshake. I'm investing all my money in Ball park hot dogs and tailgate grub. Saving to buy a maroon tailgate tent so I can retire my blue one or give it to some UK fan.

I'm sure if this is true, he had no idea that this was going on.

get his hand slapped a few years ago for giving extra help in the classroom. At least the program did. I
like many others on this board know of cases of this type of activity. It's just the real world. I bet this same guy
picked up the tab when ever he went out with anyone also. Player or not.

his methods (including getting the Bulldog Club started) were straight from Vaught`s playbook . I often wonder what would have happened if Ole Miss had hired him instead of us. I really think we were one more bad hire away from having to rethink if we really wanted to stay in the SEC. There were some bleak times before Tyler got there.

paper and handing it to Lyman Hellman (sp?) during his first game when he ran all over Memphis State.

Seems like Billy Watson, sports writer for the ledger back then for you younger guys, wrote a column on Tyler recruiting Buford Magee. They were riding around Kosciusko and Watkins asked Tyler what would you do if you saw the Ole Miss coach (Steve Sloan?) here since they have exceeded their 3 visits, and Tyler said he would wave at him.

I always heard we bid $36K and Ole Miss gave him $38K

Coach Tyler taught alumni how to recruit. There was so much enthusiasm at that time-similar to now. All areas of the state were covered by alums. Alums recruited more than the coaches in some areas ,especially Jackson and the Coast. Buford
McGee wanted 50 Grand to come to State. I was told that he wasn't worth the price because there was another back that was better by the name of Haddix. This was proven to be true. Tyler did not recruit Brown, as another poster stated, alums did.
