My favorite Veteran Day's story involves my dad, a retired Marine Lt. Col.:

My dad served two tours in Vietnam. Among the medals he was awarded, he got 46 Air medals. You got an Air Medal every time you had 20 missions. Now, those missions could be attacking enemy positions, inserting and extracting troops, or:
One day, dad was coming back from a Beer Run to Danang. His Huey was loaded to the gills with rockets, machine guns, and Ice-Cold Coors, his crew was making their way back to Quang Tri when an alert came over the radio- A platoon was pinne...d down and taking fire from NVA forces. Since he was in the area, he volunteered to get them out.
After pickling a few rockets into enemy troop positions, and his door gunners sweeping the area, he got the platoon on board his chopper and began flying them back to their Fire base.
Tired, exhausted, and wounded, the Marines heard dad say over the intercom: "Got some ice-cold beer in the back if you want it". Needless to say, their day immediately got better.
Why my dad didn't get the Medal of Honor for this, I'll never know.

There used to be a Marine who posted here regularly. Big-something, maybe? He still around? Name changed since the move to the current forum?

My Thanks to all who have served.....

I want to say thanks to all that have served our country from the bottom of my heart. To those that fought at Lexington or Concord, endured Valley Forge, defended New Orleans with General Jackson, those for whom we Remember the Alamo, the poor souls who lived and felt the horrors of Shiloh, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Antietam, the heroes of WWI, those massacred and entombed in the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, the true heroes for whom made V-E Day a reality along with those who conquered the Pacific theatre, to those whom came home from Korea and 'Nam, never forgetting those who didn't such as my uncle Gerald Mauney, to those who made Desert Storm the success that it was, and lastly to those whom have and continue to live and die to bring the cowardly bastards that murdered 3000+ souls on that Tuesday, Sep 11 morning to justice. To all of those whom history remembers and especially to those whom she has forgotten, we salute you.

Yep. I'm out now, but my screen name dates from when I was on active duty.

Comedian Mike Birbiglia (sp?) said it best:

"I love the troops because if they weren't the troops, I would be the troops and I would be the worst troops."

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served.

I miss Big Ern. What ever happen to Costanza. He use to talk about post counts and seems when he got to 10k post he went away. Kind of like making it to the pearly gates and telling saint pete no thanks.

He was cowpower then changed his name to MSUCostanza. I suspect he's still here under a different username.
